This past weekend, I went to Philadelphia for a conference. We drove down from northern New Jersey. I packed my Baxter HomeChoice cycler and enough bags of solution, cartridges and drain bags for the 2 nights I was away from home. Packing drain bags turned out to be a good choice as the bed with the electric outlet would not have reached the bathroom sink or tub even with extensions.

I had my roommate don a mask when I did for hook up and disconnect. I had no problems at all. Doing PD with the Baxter machine allowed me the flexibility to just go to the conference without worry.

05/08 Started CCPD (my cycler: The little box of alarms)
07/09 AV Fistula and Permacath added, PD catheter removed. PD discontinued and Hemodialysis resumed
08/09 AV Fistula redone higher up on arm, first one did not work
07/11 Mass found on remaining kidney
08/11 Radical Nephrectomy, confirmed that mass was renal cell carcinoma
12/12 Whipple, mass on pancreas confirmed as renal cell carcinoma

• I'm not a complete Idiot -- some parts are missing.

that's great!  very encouraging that you could travel.  :cuddle;

What did you do with King Leon?  Does he miss you when you are away?

I left King Leon some cat toys, bowls of crunchy food and water. He was fine. When I came home he let me pet him for a few minutes, which means he missed his dad.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Thanks for sharing, I am on the Baxter cycler as well but have not traveled yet. How did you discard everything?

 :clap;  PD does make it easier to travel.

I have done my exchanges in the strangest of places and NEVER (touch wood) had an infection.   :cuddle;

I just put everything in regular trash bags that I had packed and tied them shut. Housekeeping took the bags each day. Everything except used syringes is just regular trash, it is not considered medical waste. I took my used syringes home with me and put them in a red sharps container. My hospital takes the full red sharps containers and destroys them with their medical waste for free.

That's great to hear!  I'm looking into traveling in the next few months with a cycler and your story is definitely encouraging :)

Admin for IHateDialysis 2008 - 2014, retired.
Jenna is our daughter, bad bladder damaged her kidneys.
Was on in-center hemodialysis 2003-2007.
7 yr transplant lost due to rejection.
She did PD Sept. 2013 - July 2017

Great to hear, Mikey. I will be going on my first one night trip next Saturday. Only a relatively
short trip, about 90 miles and staying in a hotel for the night. It's a test for longer vacation planned.
I hope the alarm doesn't wake the people in the next room. I won't be able to weigh, but I will have
to guess in advance the dianeal percentage. Good idea to take a drain bag in case the tubing won't
reach the toilet.

yes we travel with our cycler too.. just a note dont forget to take manuals just in case of a power outage or cycler would die...and some extra supllies due to bad weather or something would have a hole heaven forbid.. but it is a good idea talking with experience..its nice to have extra too if there would be car touble as well.. thats the thing need to be prepared for anything .... glad to hear you had a good time :bandance;
