Hi, I'm Carla, I am training for home dialysis on the nxstage system. I chose the user name of alrac because my training nurse said that I do everything backwards, so the says my name backwards. I've been on dialysis since november of 07. I started having renal problems when I was 4 but I was blessed and dodged the machine for 36 years. I feel extremely blessed to have stumbled upon this site. I felt like no one could understand what I was feeling. When I was in center, no one wanted to talk about why we were there. Not sure what else to tell you at this point, but I'm glad to 'meet' you all.

Welcome Carla!!! Nice to have you with us
Interesting point you make that people in center don't want to talk about why we are there. I've noticed that too - in general. I suppose everyone deals in their own way. Some probably don't want to talk about it - that would mean admitting it is a reality (some are really into denial that I've seen). The other thing is I think staff, in general, do not encourage discussion of those things unless it's on a professional basis (ie: taking history or similar). I think an aspect to that is that if people compare notes they may get the wrong idea about their own treatment. What I mean is say I tell the guy next to me that I'm on dose X of medicine Y and that sorted out something I was feeling and he figures oh, but he's not on as much and has a problem.. rather than talk to his doc he might decide to "self medicate" which is BAD BAD BAD given everyone's medical situation is different and that could lead to bad karma. In a related vein I think they don't talk about transplantation much to those on the list because those who aren't might get upset - and I can understand that too. It's difficult in a way (so my nurse whispers to me that she prays I get a kidney soon.. I think they are sick of having me in the unit!!!
).
Anyhoo welcome!! I am sure our community can help you with your own experiences because we understand what it is like in our own ways we can well relate.

Hi Carla,
I am new here too. I found it accidentally doing research for my school paper.( I am a nursing student). I am really here because my son is 9 and on dialysis for the second time around. I have noticed that most but not all don't stick around for many reasons. They really dont give us parents anywhere to sit with our child, and you feel uncomfortable there. I have sensed most parents don't want to stick around because it means they have to face the reality and they don't want to see there child suffer. Luckily at our unit, the kids never get bored because they have a teacher work with them for an hour and have a child life specialist come in and play games and have activities for them. Personally I think it would be great if we could have a support group atleast once a month and I have tried to get one started but they(nurses) tell me Id be the only to show up. It would be pointless to have a support group by myself and I may get committed if I go in and talk to myself or go for one end of the room to another pretending to be other people! Ok, Its time for me to leave; I am starting to think silly thoughts and I am scaring myself now!LOL!

Carla. So glad that you found us and we know you will find tons of information and support here. Please post often.
By the way, where in tidewater VA are you from. I'm in southern Maryland and could probably take a boat and meet up with you quicker then I could by car.
