Yogi, our cowdog has taken to howling --- whenever--- we never know --- could be 5am  or 9pm --
he only started doing this since Sad Sack died --- Sad Sack was a basicallly an indoor dog as she got so old --
she was always inside at night -- now, I let Yogi in more during the day to give him attention  --- we want him outside at night --
if someone tried to come in the gate - he would have a fit --- and he is good with snakes --- and this huge, growling raccoon stopped visiting us when we got Yogi -
the neighbors are nice but......... it is not the call of the wild ---- he has not balls --- or very, very little ones
we have one other pet -- Slugger -- a 14 year old cat whose dominates Yogi -
is there anything I can do --- my husband would not let him stay all night in the house -- and I love him -- he is 7 years old

I've got no advice - my dogs are indoor dogs and sleep inside.   Why won't husband let him sleep inside? 
If it has only been a little while since Sad Sack passed away perhaps it is lonliness and the howling will subside.

He must be hearing something.  Do you have other dogs in the neighborhood barking.  New fire station in the neighborhood?  You can yell at him when he does it and tell him "NO".  Poor Yogi Bear.

Heyyyyyy  Boo Boo.

It is dark and lonely outside at night.  I would be complaining as well.

Guard dogs are just as good inside as outside.  And if inside they cant be drugged or feed to keep them quite.  
Here Yogi want a t-bone steak! Good puppy now stay here ok.  Wake up and car is gone :-(

My real answer would be to muzzle him.  But to me that is like abuse and a dog should never be muzzled, although some kids

we only muzzle Yogi when we swim --- he tries to rescue us and especially if we go down the slide
- he jumps in and tries to pull me out ---- it is funny but annoying

twirl, I vote for another puppy. Here's a picture of our son's Sydney. She lived to be almost 14 and was the sweetest dog.

I totally think Yogi is sad and missing Sad Sack.  When Skye died, Luke would just sit around crying and not eating.  He was lonely for his buddy. 

I really wanted a Puggle, did not want another big dog.  I thought they would be fun, cute, cuddly; a total lap dog.  Instead, we decided to head to the shelter and we picked out Scooby.  He was little at first, now he's a 65lb lap dog.  Not my first intention, but we fell in love with him.

My dogs sleep on my bed too even though hubby grumbles about it. Too bad for him. But they are tiny dogs and don't take up much space.

Twirl, rescue groups still charge a lot! We would have paid probably at least $250 for our rescue Yorkie, but the head of the rescue group knew us and my husband did some work for her group so we got him for free. But, rescues are awesome and it is much better than buying from a pet store. Schnappi may not have been a puppy when we got him - he was about 4 years old, but I fell totally in love with Schnappi. They told us he was running around in the street all muddy and wet when they found him. We got our kitty MewMew from the same rescue group and she is the sweetest cat. They just dumped her off in a box by the rescue's building and she was very skittish of people. Very active, but very cuddly too when she stops for a break.

I would have to kick my husband out of bed - it took a few years for him to let Sad Sack in the house --- I let him in the house all the time when my husband is a school --- Yogi is so gentle ( but big ) yesterday Trasie ( 2 years old ) was feeding him dirt and he would eat it and spit out the grass ----  not every husband is as understanding about dogs like you are Slugg  ------ or does your wife feel about your dog on the bed?
