My Turn to RANT!

 Hi all,

I returned to work a month after being diagnosed with kidney failure.  I work for a supermarket chain in the UK and used to be a dept manager.  I stepped down so I could take a job with the same company and live with my father who wasn`t well.  On my first day in my new store, my doctor called me and told me to go to hospital and I stayed there for 2 weeks and had about 3 weeks at home.  When I went back to work, I had to go on the check-outs cos of the line in my chest and had to be on "light duties".

My new boss was well aware of my managerial experience (16 yrs in all) and took me to one side last week and said he had plans for me and implied I wouldn`t be stuck on check-outs forever cos it would be a waste of my talent.

Well, he`s been taking his time telling me what his plan is so I went to ask him tonight.  I was disappointed and angered by his reply which was "the positions are advertised and if you feel up to it, you can apply." Well, I feel so let down.  I was thinking he was a great boss, a real PEOPLE PERSON who was gonna support me no matter what.  Now, I just feel it`s  a load of BS and I`m still going to have to apply for a job which is beneath me anyway and what`s even worse is as they`ve been advertised, some spotty teenager may get the position over me and to be quite frank, if that happens I shall have to look for work elsewhere cos I will feel like I have been stabbed in the back cos of my condition which is beyond my control.

You know, you try and deal with each situation as best you can but it`s hard to remain positive when things like this happen.  I was so pissed off tonight, I nearly told him to stuff his p*cking job and walk out!

But I didn`t, like a meek little lamb, I just took it all in and will follow the procedure of applying for a crap job with crap pay which will probably go to a kid half my age!

Joe recently got sort of a demotion with no pay change.  They said they did it because his numbers weren't as good as the rest of the team, which is bullshit.  I think they did it so when he's out so much it won't matter.  I can sort of understand why, but I hate that it makes him feel like crap.

Ya I can understand that. I went back to work just 3 weeks ago and I was hoping my pay would not be changed but now I am working minimum wage and am put in the isles taking expired stuff off the shelves. When I first came to work I had no clue what my job description was but thought they would at least "train" me for my new position. I had the hardest time getting answers and I feel like they are just trying to shove me somewhere non-important so it won't matter if I end up in the hospital again without notice like last time

I was never management like you and only have 5 years in this company. But I used to work at another job for 9 years and was up for a promotion that I had to turn down because of dialysis.
This time around at this job I was hoping I would at least be put in some position.

The truth is they don't know what to expect and can't ask you for fear of being sued for discrimination. So instead they stick to their assumed prejudgements in their heads and treat you according to them.

That was supposed to be funny. I feel for you people because I am failing miserably at trying to attain a job. I just can't do the things I used to be able to do. So I cut lawns in the summer, plow snow in the winter and paint houses when I find a project, the only benefit to being self employed when your sick is you only mess up your own schedule, but sometimes you piss off the customer.
What happens to me is I feel good when I first get the project and I'll be expected to finish by a certain time but then somedays I feel really sick so I leave early, next thing you know is the 2 day project turns into 4 days.

Oh man.  It is hard too, when you have a boss or three of them all pulling you different ways.  Some days I just hate the adults in my life and love the kids I work with.  I know what you mean about  prejudgments with work.  People know I have ESRD but see me as normal and when I cannot do something because of dialysis or I am not feeling well, they look at me funny.

Ya exactly! When I had to give up my 9 year career and apply to the store I am in now in 2001, I got in because I did NOT tell them about my health! I really wanted the security of being in a unionized job! So I was working as hard as i could but I was slow because my hemoglobin was still very low. But I made it and the day my boss told me I was in the union I apologized and said, I am about to tell you something that may upset you but I think once you hear it you can understand why I could not say anything until I was in the union to protect me. (He was a decent man but still I knew once I told him he wished he could get rid of me).

I told him, "In 3 days time I will be off for 6 weeks as I am having surgery."
He said, "What for?"
I said, "I am going on dialysis soon and need to get a catheter implanted in me."

For the 4 years I worked while on PD I had problems with many of the co-workers but the worst was a guy who used to yell, "You are useless here! Just go home and sit on disability!! We don't NEED you here!!" and I found out also through my friend who used to work with me that when he was trying to get another friend into the store as a co-worker the boss said something along the lines of, "I will not hire anymore of your friends because your last one is disabled and you never told me."

I'm with you Sluff....it sucks BIG time. I used to trim and mow the father in laws 3 + acres nice and clean. People used to call it "the golf course". Now its all I can do, just to climb on the tractor and keep the main yard mowed. The trimming, forget it, I tried that early spring, couldn't hack the hillsides. At nearly 50 degree slopes, I used to use the weedwacker, and golf spikes, and no problem. But this year, did it 1 time and it took a week to recover. Hard to see it like that, sad end to 13 years of doing the work. I feel like the old homestead, just a shell of what  it used to be.

My son is a big help. I don't know what I'm going to do when he joins the Marines in a few years.

I know the "can't cut the grass feeling".  Last time I did it I ended up with a bad case of bonchitis.  Used to be able to go out and cut and trim and do stuff in the yard.  Not anymore.  House person now.

The kids a warrior, he wants to join the Marines and be on the front lines urban warfare and a sniper. Possible special Operations.

He's going to be 16 on Sept 21st. Almost 6' tall 185 lbs all muscle.

He's a blackbelt in Martial Arts and he is part of the American Cadet Alliance.

If I could keep him out of trouble long enough he'll do good.  ( minor typical teenager trouble)

Ohh Sluff, i feel ya buddy,  we are dealing with a teenage "GIRL" (one of our Goddaughters) and ohhh maaaaan.. i think we need to find a solution for these teens that "know it all" and give them a good reality check on their a$$ dammit...    (whew, my little rant) thank you

Tough age, I try to be a cool Dad so he tells me alot more than other kids tell their parents, but it's tough sometimes. We do have a good relationship but i have to let alot go.

Yes indeed, my son and I are very close, in fact we have a little saying "DFL" know what that means? I have mentioned it before but know one here knows what it means. Can you guess? If not, ask goofynina via a PM she knows.
