I have always been told. NEVER to get a Sun Tan on the fistula arm. It makes the skin dry up, plus it is harder to push the needles in and longer for the needle holes to heal. I got told this is 1980 is it the same? The heat in the UK over the past two weeks as reach over the 30s. Just something I was thinking about. It as become a habit now, I alway wear long sleeve shirts in the Sun.

I am really sun tanned on my fistula and it is fine. If fact I used to wear long sleeve shirts because I was embarassed of my fistula, but now I say screw the people who stare. Really doctors are not always right. You should know that best of all.

Sounds like a load of shit to me  :-\ Never been told this. I got a tan last summer and it didn't affect it whatsoever. I actually got severely burned and had blisters all over my back, legs, and bum  :-[ It hurt like all hell, not even pain killers helped much. Just a reminder, if you are tired, as a lot of us probably are, do not fall asleep on the beach!
The only thing I think could be a problem is if the blisters got infected and they were actually around/on the fistula.

I agree Epoman, I dont care either. And the more pale your skin is, the more the scars stand out. Not that Im condoning sunbaking at all. My tan didnt last for long, it never does :(

I would say use suntan block if you are worried but enjoy the sun while you can because when you have a kidney transplant you can NOT be in the sun withOUT strong sunblock so ... no more tans at that time ... enjoy it while you can! The nurses don't live your life! You do! ;)

I've tanned my fistula arm with no adverse consequences, and this is my original fistula that I got 21 years ago.  I spend a lot of time at the beach, recreating and surf-fishing all year long.  I do use sunblock.

Just old information I got told years ago when I had my second fistula in 1980. Just wondered about your thoughts on it, plus if anything had changed. I have always worn long sleeved shirts, because of the way my arms look. Now, do not care anymore. So stared to ware t-shirts, and short sleeved shirts.Over here in Red Hot England.I do put block on maybe one or two times a year :o plus on the two inch stretch that is left of my fistula ;D
