AlohaBeth and I saw this Thanksgiving night.   It was wonderful!  Nicloe Kidman and Hugh Jackman - both were excellent.  The scenery was incredible.  It is set near Darwin when Japan bombed Australia.  Great story and even better photography.  It is long, but I didn't want it to end.  The little boy in it is ---well, there aren't enough words to describe him.  What a beautiful child and his acting is brilliant.   It will make you want to do a "walkabout"!   I hope some of our Aussie's see it and let me know their thoughts.  I am ready to see it again.   But, I always like Baz Lurman's (the director) movies.  He takes a few years to make them, but they are always brilliant.  Nicole and Hugh signed on before they had even read a script.   I liked it, can you tell??

He was discovered by Baz and comes from Broome Western Australia

The filming of the bombing was at Darwin's local port they closed the port and lots of streets for a couple of weeks (can't believe they could do that in a capital city) suppose money can buy anything.  oh yeah the nt government contributed to the film costs too.

All Darwinians have mates who were extras in the film

It was filmed wholly in Australia — on location sites in Sydney, Darwin, Kununurra in Western Australia and Bowen in Queensland — and at Fox Studios in Sydney.

Hey Cheree.  We should go the gold class during the day during the week when noone will be there and they have a maximum of about 20 people in the cinema and during the day it would be even less.  I'll organise it.  Of course Russell can come as well. xx

Thanks Jessup!   Brandon is an incredible child. He has never acted before.  Saw an interview today with Hugh Jackman and he calls Brandon "magical".   And "King George" was amazing also.   My Dad was sent to Australia during the War and it made me understand more about why he was there.     The photography was so breath taking.  Truly it is one of the best movies I have seen and I am a HUGE  movie fan.   Don't wait until it comes out on DVD.   See it on the big screen.    We were crying, laughing, cheering and clapping out loud.  It shows scenes of Australia you haven't seen before and it was amazing.   I know, I keep praising it --but it is that good.  Oh, I mention how yummy Hugh Jackman is?   :2thumbsup;

Another interesting fact about dear Brandon.  He suffered leukemia at age 6 and was a very very shy child.  Wow look at him now.

Going through life tied to a chair!

« Reply #9 on: December 05, 2008, 03:10:25 PM »

I saw it the day after Thanksgiving.  It was good, but not the best I've seen.  Very predictiable.  It just didn't move me emotionally.  Maybe I was just in a quiet mood or something.  The scenery was nice but I would rather see trees, green grass and full trees.  I don't know.... it was a nice infomercial for Australia.  I give it only two thumbs up.   :thumbup;  :thumbup;

I didn't look at it as an infomercial.  I really enjoy seeing such diverse scenery, especially of a place I have never been to.  All movies can't be of the Northwest ---just kidding!!

Jessup, I hadn't read that about Brandon.  What a precious child.  It will be interesting to see him as his career progresses.

Boxman, I think Nicole has become so much better since she split with Tom Cruise.  I love her movies and I like that she picks and chooses and doesn't just make a quick movie and then another.   She must be visiting you in between movies!   :rofl;

As I said, I love Baz Lurman's movies.  He is a marvelous director.

Saw the movie today and couldn't wait to tell you how much I loved it.
Romantic, historical, culturally enlightening, and great cinematography. Hugh Jackman is a Babe.
Now I'm going to have to put Australia on my "bucket list".

Sunny, glad you enjoyed it too.   I can't wait to see it again.  To all our Aussies,  your country looks fascinating, breath taking and full of wonder.   I would love to see some of it in person----maybe one day.     We need a "wishing" smilie   :thumbup;

Yes Paris. There was a particular scene involving the boy, lots of animals, and his faith... I went through the entire spectrum of emotions and almost lost it.

Somewhere over the rainbow... Oz! The magic in the movie was the boy and his complete faith in his song. I loved this movie! I actually left the theater satisfied (usually I leave asking "where's the rest of the movie???")

Did anyone else notice the similarity between certain shots with "Mrs. Boss" against a threatening sky and "Dorothy" against a threatening sky? Clearly intentional.
