Hi, I am Judy from Northern California. I am 63 years old and work full time as a Hotel Manager. I have been on dialysis for 2 months. I am scared and curious and unsure of what is Normal
I have enjoyed reading some of the phases others go through and intend to ask bunches of questions
I have a fistula in my upper arm. It seems to be difficult for the techs to get it working each time. I have been infiltrated several times already. I am looking forward to visiting and getting to enjoy such a supportive group of people. Thanks, Noduh in Ca

You have found the best site on the internet for honest answers and for great support. How do you feel working full time and being on dialysis? I am sure you will have lots to add to this group and we look forward to hearing more about you. Ask lots of questions. Everyone is very willing to help and they will give you their honest opinion---the good, the bad, and the ugly! We also have a lot of fun with each other. We just need to laugh somedays! We are very glad you joined us, Judy

NoDuh! I love your name. I lived in Sacramento for 6 years and have good friends in Redding. How far is north? Two months and still working. That is great. Try and keep it up. Rest when you can. I'd like to hear more about you. Are you eligible for a transplant? What did your kidneys fail from? So much to know. I'm glad you joined us. I look forward to your posts.

Hi Judy,
Ask for the best cannulator in the facility, and insist to the highest one in charge to have the best cannulator establish your needle sites. If you still have trouble, you may need to have a fistulagram, taking a picture of your fistula. Sometimes you will have a stricture, or occlusion that can be easily opened up. Good Luck.

NurseW...Ask for the best Cannulator?
oh please let me tell you what I was told when I asked that "several" times....Now I just give specific instructions to whoever cannulates me and I make sure my instructions are followed.

Ask again. Ask the Administrator. Ask the Dr. Ask the Medical Director. Change clinics if they won't take care of you. Your arm, your lifeline.

Nice to have you with us Judy. Post often and I look forward to hearing about your experiences with dialysis. As for your fistula, once you get it established and it's matured, you might consider cannulating yourself. Best control and consistency you can hope for. I know how crazy that sounds at first but many people would never go back once they get comfortable with doing it themselves. I am one of those people.

I agree with Monrein about the cannulating. Once you have identified a great cannulator, ask him\her to show you how. Patients all say it hurts less to do it themselves. You will have more control, and who will take better care of your lifeline than you. Hats off to anyone who can do it themselves, it is a big step...

Thank you so much everyone, I'm looking forward to talking to everyone. Of course that will be when I get used to navigating the site!! I have been lucky enough to have been awarded 3 techs who are great with my fistula so I've over come that stress. I am looking forward to being as brave as Monrein. I am holding at the end and have started putting my own finishing bandages on. That cuts out about 1/2 hour of sit around time. I am always in a hurry, wrong thing to be huh! Not to mention the cold, what the heck is that all about, I'm a California girl ,heck my winter shoes are socks with my sandals, now I'm wrapped up like an Eskimo and on my back, what a fine mess I've gotten myself into. Got Go
