My name is Sue and Iam so happy I found this site as I have plenty questions.  I have done much reading and it has been a great help!  It was about a year ago that I went in the hospital to get a AV graph. pd cath and a quinton cath placed.  I was out and had a few hemo's done through the quinton while just starting to be trained for PD.  A few days latter I woke in terrific pain and could hardly move.
Found to have gotten MRSA--staph infection in the spine.  It was terribly painful and I was sent to rehab for a few months and was put on PD there.  There were some nights I seemed to have way to much fluild put in.  Also there were time that the bags on the rack appeared to be ready to burst.  One night I could hardly breath and next morning sent to PCU where I had a chest tap and they drained almost 3000cc diaysate fluild from my thoracic cavity.  I than became a hemo pt. and the PD was removed.  Has anyone had a problem like this before?  I wonder if that heals can it be tried again?  I feel I could do this if trained and not where nurses are guessing at how to do this.  In the mean time I can hardly bear those three days a week in that chair.  There is no one to compare notes with because machine in between patients and not sure many want to talk anyway.  Getting used to being disabled, Iguess.  Know you all know what Im talking about here.  Any suggestions very welcomed.                                                   Sue

You have come to a great group of people.  Many who were put on dialysis before we had a chance or knew what questions to ask.  Luckily we have each other to lean on.  You can learn from us and I'm sure we will all be able to learn from you.

Sue, sounds like you have been hostage to the "Idiot Nurses" hall of fame.  Yes, I think if you had the proper training without "help" from an idiot you would do fine.  The question would be if you have too much scar tissue now.  The peritoneum has to be permeable in-order for the toxins to move into the solution.  Your nephrologist would be the one to ask.

It sounds like the medical profession almost drowned you. They killed me and now it is just a matter of time.

Welcome to our community, Sue!  So glad that you joined us.  I am on hemo - have been for 3 years.  It is not the most pleasant, but I have got accustomed to it now and my body seems to have adjusted to it.  There is so much information on this site - our buzzword is "Knowledge is Power!'".  but as you must have seen, there is a lot of emotional support here, and even some fun!
We already have some great members from Floriday.  Maybe you guys will arrange a Florida meeting some day.  Of course with pictures!  Remember that this is now your other family

hi Sue,
You can certainly do PD once healed, as long as you don't have too much scar tissue.  Why not look into Home Hemo?  You can do it 4-6 times a week at home, your own schedule.  I run a clinic, if you feel like they aren't training you well, or are not trained well themselves,  speak up.  This is your life, don't be embarrased or afraid to ask questions, or demand better care.  Good Luck,  Vicki
