Don't know what to say. Within a few hours of getting home from holiday, Heph was in hospital with suspected peritonitis. I hate that even though we do get to do great things, it's always overshadowed by ESRF and it's complications.  :P

::) Last night when he was on the machine, he kept complaining that he was cold, it wasn't and anyway, he had a sleeping bag, a duvet, and three blankets, he shouldn't even have been cold in arctic Russia, so after a couple of hours of him tossing, turning and complaining, I got up and took his temperature and it was normal. I was about to go back to bed, when he said he'd had some abdo pain, I put the light on checked the drain bag and it was cloudy.

Heph called the renal unit, they told us to go in. He seemed fine. After we arrived at the unit, they got him to drain out which was then really painful, then while they messed about getting a doctor and bloods etc, they left him dry, which he said was even more painful, then, I think because of the pain, he started to vomit and voila, one peritonitis. Well, that is what they were saying at 3.30am when I left. They were about to start antibiotics.

How long does this take to clear up? How long is the usual stay in hospital? We were told you can usually treat peritonitis at home, can you?

Goofynina, the vacation was wonderful!

It all depends on how bad it is.

Peritonitis can be VERY painful but it is good that you guys caught it RIGHT away! It can clear up as soon as a few days.

For me it was not detected soon enough and it took over a month but I had a very VERY severe case.

Good luck to you guys! Since you guys went in right away it is a good thing and a good chance that it should clear up fast. I am only going by my own experiences.

Apparently, the peritonitis has tunnelled from the exit site infection they have been "treating" for four months!  >:( This really pisses me off as they have never taken him very seriously about it and only gave him antibiotics if he created a fuss!  >:D

So now he has to stay as an in patient for a course of iv antibiotics to treat the outward infection as well as those they put in the bags. If not for the exit site, we'd be treating it at home. If it doesn't clear the exit site they are threatening to remove the catheter and back to hemo. Our worst nightmare!  >:D  >:D  >:D  >:D

Heph seems in good spirits though, apart from complaining about the food,  :P which is notoriously bad here in the UK, not sure what it's like elsewhere in the world!

Don't take the poor food personally, LOL.  It's notoriously bad in any hospital.

The best thing to do is to know how to recognize signs of infection at the exit site so well that they can't dismiss it and must take you seriously! Do you know the signs? Before it gets to the Peritoneum?

Hope that does NOT happen as that IS what happened to me :(

Yeah Angieskidney, we know the signs, we kept telling them at the hospital and they kept telling us it was OK. I think they thought we were a little bit paranoid.

In the end Heph went to our GP a couple of times and asked him for antibiotics, which he gave, but the CAPD unit were a little slow.

Hi OB

Heph is doing really well, responding well to treatment and his fluid came clear last night. Woohoo.  :D He's had more bloods taken this morning and the doctors will be around later and hopefully he will be home later today. All the fever and pain is gone and he feels great, he doesn't want to be tucked up in bed any longer!  ::)

Can't wait to get him home, really, really missed him.  :'(

Thanks for your concern OB, love to you and yours.

Hi everyone,

thanks for your kind thoughts, I was let out of hospital last night on day release. today we went to the ward to get another antibiotic injection and be checked out by the Drs. they came in really serious and said either I stay in for the rest of the week for antibiotics twice a day, or I drive there twice a day just for the antibiotics.

we finally reached a result I will go in once a day for the rest of the week and be given a stronger antibiotics drip. and then they will check my exit site. I will be having my tenkoff catheter replaced once the infection is clear, but will not need Hemo as they said they will dialyse me really well before hand and then dialyse with small fluid amounts throught the new line within a few days.

sounds best to me. Blessings

Well we were given the option to either stay in hospital for the week or I could go in for antibiotics every day, so we opted for the out patient version.

every day we have gone to hospital waited on average 4 hours and got my IV antibiotics.
once I am clear of infection they plan to do a surgery to move the line and put a new one on the other side. which sucks. I hate the tuby thing, I love life at the moment and we are really glad of the freedom that Boris the cycler gives us but yet another small surgery sucks.

Heph >:( >:( >:D >:( >:D
