paul.karen, your story gave me goosebumps!

I don't think I personally could ever be that comfortable with a "ghost" in the house. . .

I walk under this bridge almost every day. There are nice trails and many people bring their dogs out for exercise. I have been bringing my camera along and have taken many pictures of it. I took this photo last week.
Here's more info about the bridge:
The Colorado Street Bridge is a historic concrete arch bridge in Pasadena, California, USA. It was built in 1913 and crosses over the Arroyo Seco. It spans 1,486 feet (453 m).
The majestic 1913 bridge not only wowed early travelers crossing the causeway, but soon took on a more sinister note when people began to leap from the 150 foot bridge to their death. Within a decade of its construction, locals had begun to call it the “Suicide Bridge,” and as you can imagine, legends began to abound that the bridge was haunted be those unfortunate souls. Over the years, it is estimated that more than 100 people took their lives leaping the 150 feet into the arroyo below. One of the more notable suicides was when a despondent mother threw her baby girl over the railing on May 1, 1937. She then followed her into the depths of the canyon. Though the mother died, her child miraculously survived. Evidently, her mother had inadvertently tossed her into some nearby trees, and she was later recovered from the thick branches.
According to the tales, a number of spirits are said to wander the bridge itself as well as the arroyo below. Others have heard unexplained cries coming from the canyon. One report tells of spectral man that is often seen wandering the bridge who wears wire rimmed glasses. Other people have claimed to see a woman in a long flowing robe, who stands atop one of the parapets, before vanishing as she throws herself off the side.
In the arroyo below, phantom forms have been seen walking the river bed, a number of unexplainable sounds are often heard, and the atmosphere is often described as “thick.”

I haven't see any spirits, but I know others who have!

Linda, You have to see that rock and Moll Dyer Road is just south of Leonardtown High School on the left. My son said he will NEVER travel down that road at night because he's hair stands up. Almost as good as Point Lookout.  :waving;

Monrovia woman dead after jumping from Colorado Street bridge
Posted: 02/23/2009 06:33:36 PM PST

PASADENA - A 51-year old Monrovian woman died Monday after jumping off the Colorado Street bridge, authorities said.

Paramedics responding to a call found the woman in "extremely critical condition" and transported her to a local hospital where she died, Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

The call was placed shortly at 8:07 a.m., Pasadena Police spokeswoman Janet Pope Givens said.

"Some people who were taking a walk on the bridge had noted some sandals and a purse in one of the sitting areas," Pope Givens said. "They thought it was suspicious and called the police department, and on further investigation they found the victim."
..............

We were walking nearby this morning when they took her away, poor soul. All we could do was say a prayer for her. RIP.

I always wonder what could have happened in their life to have brought that person to take such drastic measures, ya know?   To us, their reasons may have been "petty" but apparently to them, it was enough of a reason to give up............sad.............

Always carrying the big silly grin!

« Reply #38 on: March 01, 2009, 07:47:55 AM »

On December 17, 1975 our home burned.  At that time our family consisted of my father, step mother, 14 kids between the ages of 1 and 17 and an assortment of dogs, cats, gerbils and other such pets.  I was the 17 yr old of that bunch and as we stood there in the winter cold we were all asking each other...where are we gonna live?  My father, infinately calm in any situation, said to us...don't worry something will come...

We were still at the fire site trying to rummage through and find anything worth saving when this older gent pulls up and walks over to my father.  He said he had a big old farmhouse sitting empty, but it had power and heat...we could go right then and move in...he would make arrangements for rent and whatever at a later date with Dad.

We moved into the house...it was huge, as it needed to be!  Time passed and we got furniture, clothes and the like.  One of the items donated to us was this big wooden rocking chair..which we placed in the livingroom.  Now a chair in our house wasn't often empty...but hey...anything can happen, ya know?  The younger kids started saying it would rock by itself.  We told em they were silly and that someone was playing a trick on them.  Until my step mother came out of the livingroom one night and said...uhhh...the damn chair is rocking!

Whoever was rocking the chair became part of the family....you'd hear someone say "He's rocking again."  A few years later ( I had long since moved out on my own) after we had rented the house for a fair amount of time, the owner came by to make a deal with Dad to buy the house.  Dad was giving him the tour of some remodelling he had done and when they got to the livingroom the man stopped, stared at the chair and said.....wow, my mother had a chair just like that and it sat right in that spot...she would rock every evening.

Well, we knew who our "rocker" was.  As long as that chair was there whenever it rocked..someone would say "Granny's rockin".  Funny how we were never scared by it.  It was just something that was.

I for one, believe in ghosts and find the thought interesting and somehow comforting at times.  That our "people" could give us signs that they are still there watching over our lives.

The restaurant my parents owned in Mackinaw City was supposed to be haunted.  Back in the early 1900's, the owner's son hung himself in the basement.  Supposedly, he wandered around the building, moving things.  The people my parents bought it from said he would relight all the candles on the dining room tables at about 3 in the morning.  The cops had called them several times to come back and blow them out.  I never saw him do that, but I did have a weird thing happen one night while I was in the basement.  It was Labor Day, which is the busiest day of the year in our town. It's the only day of the year that the public is allowed to walk across the Mackinac Bridge.  The town's year-round residents only number about 1000.  On Labor Day, we've had up to 100,000 walk the Bridge.  It's crazy, and we start serving breakfast at 6 am to the ravaging hordes.  At the end of one Labor Day, when I'd been up and moving since 4 am, I was finishing clean-up by hauling a final load of aprons down to the basement to the washers and dryers.  It was after 2 am, so you can imagine I wasn't very coherent.  I had just finished tossing a load from a washer into one of the dryers, when I stopped to yawn.  The dryer door was still open when I leaned over to look back into the washer to make sure it was empty.  While I was looking, the dryer door closed by itself and the button on the dryer depressed and the dryer started.   I kind of froze.  I knew I was tired, but I didn't think I was tired enough to start hallucinating!  After a minute, my brain kicked into gear, and I said out loud, "Okay, you can finish the next load.  Thanks!"
Then I scooted back upstairs as fast as I could go!

My husband and I were talking about this thread the other day- (before he died and took my heart with him  :'( )

I asked him if we could promise each other if whoever goes first would come back if it was possible and comfort the other, and he liked that idea- right now I would give everything to feel him one more time. maybe I will, maybe if I want to bad enough.....our power kept lickering last night- I just pretended it was him, I keep pretending he is just asleep behind me on the couch and this is just a bad fricken dream :'(

Wenchie and jbeany, those are some great experiences.   :thx;

I, too, think it is somewhat comforting to contemplate that our loved ones can remain in contact in some manner.

It can be frightening, because it is the "unknown", but ghosts and ghost stories are always an interesting topic.

They say we have a ghost in our auditorium at school. The band teacher says she has smelled cigar smoke and heard noises when she has been by herself.

They also say a studnet who shot himself on Rialto High campus haunts the campus at night and in the daytime.  One of my friends who went to school there has seen the ghost.
