I was just wondering, given that it is nearing Halloween, if anyone has any true life ghost stories to share. . .

I saw a ghost once!!!  Or I really thought I had.  I was only about 12 and was staying with my oldest sister for a few days.  She had 4 kids just a little younger than me. They lived in an old 2 storey house and the bathroom was upstairs. I was really brave and going to go to the bathroom without turning on the light in the hallway.  Well when I got to the top of the stairs I saw this headless "thing".  I ran back down the steps with goosebums all over me and felt like my hair was standing on end!!!  I wouldn't let anybody know that I had gotten a fright so I waiting a few minutes until I calmed down a little and turned on the light in the hallway to try again.  My sis had hung a one piece skidoo suit on a line in the upstairs hall to dry. I was years before I told anybody what had happened and the fright I ad gotten!!

In Jamaica people are very superstitious and they call ghosts, "duppies".  We lived on a dairy/sugar cane estate and our house was at one time one of Jamaica's "Great Houses" and was where the governor of Jamaica used to spend the summers, since it was a little cooler than Kingston.  The beautiful home had burned to the ground many years before we got there but the three foot thick stone foundation walls were left and the place was basically a ruin.  It had been inhabited at the time of the fire by a Dr. White and the superstition was that he haunted the ruins and sometimes would appear to people in dreams at night in the form of a white snake.  So along come my parents and my Dad decided to rebuild using the same foundations and all stone walls.  The original house had been very large and grand with ballrooms and such on the ground floor and a wooden upper storey but we left off the top part.
The servants were all really nervous about this place and had many stories to tell about the ghost of Dr. White, especially since our family name is a compound of the name White.  We often had relatives visit from the US or England and they were always curious about the history of the house so quite often the servants would fill them in with grave warnings about not catching any "night air" and about not going out after dark.  We always just laughed and ignored it all.  I wish I could remember all the "real-life" sightings and encounters that our cook and others would try to scare us kids with.
My grandmother's sister who lived in Miami, was staying with us one night when we woke up to blood-curdling screams (she was always a touch dramatic, if not downright nutty).  We ran into her room, where she was absolutely petrified.  Hyperventilating all the while. She had dreamt that the great ghost snake had tried to strangle her in her sleep (she looked as if it had half succeeded) and she told us of a weird noise like a small train dragging chains.  Suddenly, the pump which supplied the house with water started up as it did regularly and she went crazy all over again.  That was the noise she'd been hearing and all the stories of the day before had settled in her head causing the "duppy" nightmare.
I was all for dressing up and trying to set her off again the following night but oddly enough, my parents thought it was a terrible idea and threatened me with my own death by strangulation if I dared.
A real missed opportunity.

Im the old house we used to live in, my housekeeper said that one day she was leaning over the bathtub and something came up behind her and patted her on the butt.  She whirled around expecting one of us, but no one was there.
I had a pot thrown across the room one evening while I was sitting in the living room. Things would get moved around. Keys would disappear and reappear in another place.  We learned to live with it.  I called it Twinkie after the line in the movie Ghostbusters about the twenty thousand pound Twinkle.

yes

there was a young boy killed in my aunt's house before they moved it, it was a grocery store and a boy came into rob it and was shot to death
and his mom would come and call out for him and look for him
after she died she still came around
the house was haunted and we used to see her
now the property is the Woodlands Hospital and people have reported seeing a ghostly lady looking creature

when I was having open heart surgery at the age of real young - 6 or something
I was alone in the room and a man came in dressed in old clothes , old from a long time ago
he asked me how I was and I said ok
and he said give them hell, kid
years later I saw a picture of my grandfather who was a hell and damnation Baptist preacher and I said I know that man
he came to see me in the hospital
I was known to run away from nurses with needles
and now look at me
one nurse in IC unit had to give me a shot in my leg b/c I was fighting her so much
that was not recently----- it was during heart surgery

My old house was built in 1882 and full of ghosts. They really don't bother me that much. Cujo does bark at them sometimes and they get into my vodka late at night.

At the RAI center in San Berdoo I was told about machines going off when they were not even on and lights going on and off at odd hours. The early early techs that came in will swear they have seen and heard things there.

My first husband lives with oldest son and his family.  The evening after he was murdered videos kept flying out of the vcr and the stereo kept turning on and off in an unused room.  This now happens periodically in my son's home, always with the electronic items and when they say hi dad or hi grandpa it stops.  There is more..but I think he just wants to be with his granddaughters.

I work in a state facility for adults with developemental disabilities. One evening I was working night shift and saw someone go past the chart room where I was sitting. The person had on very wild printed flower pj's. I flew out of the chart station and did a bed check to see who was up. Everyone was fast asleep. I had worked the shift before and bathed and dressed our individuals for bed. I know we didn't have any pj's that looked like the ones I had saw.

Flip, I love your house!

Years ago I worked as a bouncer in a bar in Milwaukee and after closing time, it was my job to help the bartenders go to the storage warehouse next door to get the   1/2 barrels of beer and liquor to restock the bar before we could go home for the night and then help move chairs up etc, to help the waitresses get out as early as possible and offer a sense of security. One particular night or very early morning the lights switch wasn't working in the warehouse, so we went to get a flashlight. Upon entering the warehouse and finding our way around I thought I saw a person in the corner and it scared the hell out of us until we realized it was a mannequin of a scary old man that we used as a prop for the Halloween decorations that the owner was going through to get ready for Halloween. We laughed about that for years because it looked so real.  :rofl;

We have a mantle clock that belonged to my great grandfather, and was passed to my grandmother, then on to my father.  In 1965 my father died very suddenly and a month later my
grandmother died, too.  The mantle clock was put on a buffet in the dining room because we had
no mantle.  The old clock had not run in years, but when it had it was a striking clock every hour on the hour.  One night a few weeks after the deaths we decided to eat in the dining room instead of at the table in the kitchen.  We were all still grieving and nervous.  About half way through the meal the old clock started striking.  My mother said it is PaPa and Mama Smith, my children got up and ran out of the room and I jumped up and tried to stop the striking.  I finally got it to hush but
we didn't eat in the dining room again for a looooooooonng time.

A couple years ago, a friend who lived upstairs of me, was killed in a car accident. He is in this picture, standing by the tree.

It reminds me of the time I picked up a witch who was hitchhiking. She sprinkled some magic dust on me and I turned into a motel.  :rofl; :clap; :rofl; :rofl;

Oh these are great  :2thumbsup;.

When we lived on Guam we went to a wedding.  Ghosts in Guam are called Totomonos.
Well i was in a basement by myslef playing pool.  And i looked up towards the stairs leading up to the main house and i saw a lady.  IN clothes dating back to around the 1700's i am guessing.  HAt and all.  She as was everything on her was all white.   Full deatails looked like a real person only all white.  She came walking down the stairs towards me.  I wasnt scared at all more in shock.  I must have blinked or looked away for a second.  Casue next thing i knew she was gone.

I went upstairs to tell my mom what happened and the owner of the house said oh you saw Anna.
Like it was just another day.  I found out she is alwasy around and this was just my turn to see her.!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once when i went home to Newfoundland me and my brother were sitting in our room and the station needle that shows what station you are on.  Started going from one side of the stero to the other.  Volume went way loud,  and my mom busted into the room to see what was up.  Me and my brother were on opposite side of room sitting on the bed.  Once mom opened the door the stereo went off.

I grew up in the middle of a civil war camp and my girlfriend and I saw many things we could never explain. A few scared the crap out of us.
Every year Point Lookout holds a ghost walk near Halloween.
