I am looking for some guidance/thoughts for my dad. He is 74, has been on PD for a little over 5 years (Fresenius cycler). They switched machines and tubing system on him in June. He has had 5 bouts of peritonitis since. He had gone 5 years without incident. He is not stupid, understands what needs done although his hygiene could be better...but he is careful about hookup and washing, etc. Just seems odd to us that all of a sudden he is having all these infection problems.
In addition, the machine is slow, pumps are noisy and the set-up/tear-down is far more cumbersome for him than the previous system. Does anyone have experience with this? Any similar stories or ideas on what could be driving this?
His nurse is arguing that his technique must be flawed or his protien levels are so low his body is not fighting the infection. His protien levels have been low for years.....it is a constant battle to keep them up.
We are so frustrated for him.....and he just feels like crap.
