My husband found a kitten the other day on the side of the road and brought it home (I say "it" because we don't know if "it's" male or female).  Anyway, he/she is adorable and lucky to still be alive.  I'm sure it would not have survived the night out on it's own on a country hwy.  I took him/her to PetSmart and they guess he/she is about 5 weeks old.

What is the best thing to use to get the urine smell to go away?  So far, he/she's pooped outside only, but I think he/she peed on my couch.  I cleaned it with some Pet cleaner stuff and then sprayed later with Pet Febrese.

I think "Nature's Miracle" is the best - available at most pet stores - or online: Nature's Miracle Stain & Odor Remover http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Natures-Miracle-Stain-Odor-Remover/254000.aspx

The PetSmart you went to should carry the Nature's Miracle.  I have found it to work well myself but it's not perfect either.  It is the best of the products I have tried.

I just wanted to say thank you to your hubby for bringing the little person home... if you keep it or not (sounds like you've been adopted already by your new owner) it's good of you to take kitty in :) I guess you'll need to train it to use a box, or just pee outside...

Welcome to your new family member!!! :)

Kittens usually don't need too much training on how to use the litter box if you want to keep her inside. My last cat didn't have to be trained at all. He saw the box and just started using it even though he had never been around a litter box before. But my new one had to be reminded -- drop her in the box every couple of hours or so or get a puppy crate, put her litter box in it and keep her in the crate when you don't have time to watch her.

It's so great of you to rescue her.

And the Nature's Miracle stuff okarol recommended is the best thing I have found to get pet odors out of upholstery and carpets.

I've never had a problem getting cats to go to the litter box. It's almost instinctive. When I change the litter boxes, I always spray them with Lysol.

My heart is broken.  This morning we woke up to find the kitty extremely lethargic and unable to hold it's head up or move it's legs consistently to walk.  I cried the entire time I was getting dressed.  I scooped her up and took her to the vet.  They immediately took her back and then told me she might just be hypoglycemic because she hasn't really been eating or drinking well since we found her.  We tried soft kitten food and bottled milk.  She obviously didn't know how to "suck" and she didn't know how to lap water.  She just sort of slammed her face into the water and then licked the water off her lips.  It was kind of cute.

She was playful, purring and seemed happy both days we had her, but the only thing was she insisted on sitting on you or climbing up to your shoulder or neck to sleep.  Or she would sleep right unders your chin sometimes.  Come to find out it was because her body temp was 90 and normal is 101.  Her lungs were working great because I could hear her crying and such when she was back with the vet.  I authorized up to $100 treatment without further authorization.  There were going to bottle feed her throughout the day, as well as perform a leukemia/aids test.  She said of the test was positive there would be no need to go any further.

The Vet called me about 5 p.m. and said that she had bottle fed her four times today and she was not getting any better, but only getting weaker.  And due to something I didn't underdstand they were unable to do the blood test.  I was at the Alamo at the time and I was just crying trying to say the words "Go ahead and put her to sleep".  Like all kittens her eyes were precious and they will haunt me for a long time to come.  Her constant crying when we left her on the couch or something I just chalked up to her missing "Mom".  Her cries would be so strong and then get real quiet and almost pleading.  I'm crushed.

I'm really upset. I couldn't imagine how that would feel... just know you and your hubby did all you could for her.. you found her out there and brought her in. Who knows what happened to her before that? It's so horribly sad specially with a new friend that was starting to burrow into your heart the minute she sat on your shoulder and purred...

My thoughts are with you both. Just know that you did a Good Thing(tm) trying to help.... I am sure that kitty, up in kitty heaven, thanks you for trying in her own way. :grouphug;

This is particularly sad for me, since McQueen (king of our household now) was a kitten brought in by my daughter after following her home after jogging.  It would be a difficult day in my household if we lost him.
I am really feeling with you.

Kelly,

Being a cat lover, I literally cried when I read your post about your "fur baby" dying!    :cuddle;  Like everyone else has said, you truly did do your best!    Do you think you will look into getting a new kitty anytime?  My heart aches for you!   :'(

We will probably not look into another kitty.  We really aren't looking to add to our family, but he couldn't have just left this little baby on the side of the road.   It wouldn't have made it through the night if he hadn't had picked it up.  It was out in the country and there are stray dogs, large birds of prey, a train track near by and, of course, the road.  Poor thing.  I'm wondering now if maybe the Mom abandoned her because she was sick.  Thanks so much for all of the support.  My husband still doesn't want to talk about it.  He says it will "mess him up again".   :'(

kellyt
once we got a puppy from a man with pups at walmart
we named in Tator b/c he looked like a little tator tot
we had him for a week when his skin starting looking odd
he had mange
and he was going to be fine and I told the vet he had a knot by his tail
and the vet said that was another story
Tator would never make it, it was some kind of a hernia
we had to put him to sleep
my children were all upset and so was I
we told Tator goodbye
I told my children this happened for a reason
if we would have not gotten him
he would have suffered a painful death
the man giving away these puppies would not have put him to sleep
he knew about the mange
and did not tell anyone
so I thought we got him so he could have a family, even if it was a short time and he had a peaceful death
we had to take Sad Sack to the vet for the whole summer to be treated for mange
we are still sad
and have some adorable photos of Allen and my husband and Tator putting up the fence
I think your kitten was blessed to be happy for that short time

mange---- skin disease dog's get    not sure of the spelling
