Well, I found the smoking gun.

I just got back from my nephrologist, where we reviewed the results of my renal ultrasound and other tests.

Diagnosis:  End-stage kidney disease caused by obstructive uropathy from an enlarged prostate.

I am really upset.  I had already been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate a year ago following a prostate biopsy, which was negative.  But back then, since I was able to pee fairly well, my urologist said to just do "watchful waiting."  And he sent me home.  He never did any other tests, such as checking my renal function to make sure my kidneys weren't being affected.  Well, it turns out, they sure were.

Was this an error on his part?  Does this constitute malpractice on his part?

I'm sorry to hear of the lack of tests that your Neph maybe should have done. I'm not educated enough to know if this was a error on the part of your Neph or a different Doctor. I know in my case sometimes the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing when it comes to the Doctors. this new insurance plan I have is addressing this problem because all the Doctors I see now are on the same computer program. ( as long as they read)

I know someone who had the same problem. But his urologist had him wear a catheter for a few weeks while they worked on reducing the prostate.
It's sad to say but you often hear of this. The creatinine blood test is an inexpensive lab test, but so many doctors wait until too late to check what's going on.
I am so sorry. I don't know if it's negligence, a malpractice attorney could tell you what recourse you have.

I would definitely contact a medical malpractice attorney and discuss it.  The doc should be held accountable for his methods.  If he's treating the prostate, he should have known about the impact of obstructive uropathy on the kidneys!
