What is the thinking about drinking beer or wine after a transplant?  I find conflicting info on the web - it's okay versus not a good idea.  The clinic told my husband that an occasional beer is okay.

I always thought it was OK as long as it wasn't to excess.  I used to have an occasional glass of wine but not much. :wine;

(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Otto had his 1st transplant when he was 22 he would have drinks here and there, we got married 2 years after and Jamacian rum was all the fluids we had for 8 days IRIE MON :beer1;

Is alcohol or soda bad for the kidneys?

Not always.  In moderation, alcohol and soda are not bad for the kidneys.  But, both affect the kidneys indirectly.  Alcoholic beverages and sodas are high in calories, and too much of them are not good for anyone with diabetes.  Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure.

A new study linked drinking two or more cola drinks (either diet or regular) each day with an increased risk for chronic kidney disease.  Other kinds of sodas did not increase the risk for chronic kidney disease.

Also, while alcohol affects the liver more directly, it can raise blood pressure.  High blood pressure may damage the kidneys.  High blood pressure is the number two cause of kidney failure.

Alcohol also can be dangerous to drink when you are on some kinds of medicine.  Make sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist about how alcohol can affect your medicines.

I was told an occasional drink was OK. Beer and wine would be preferrable over hard liqour I was told. The most I have had was three beers at a bar with classmates. That was fun to be in a social setting again. Food on the other hand was probably worse for me  :rofl;, ranch fries. Waffle fries covered in mozzarella cheese and loads of bacon.

But if you do have a drink, remember to have other fluids also.

Eye impairments and blindness in one eye began in 95, major one during visit to the Indy 500 race of that year
   -glaucoma and surgery for that
     -cataract surgery twice on same eye (2000 - 2002). another one growing in good eye
