Recent kidney transplant problem
«

A friend of mine had her 3rd kidney transplant 2 weeks ago. She is 35 years old and received a kidney from a living donor. I got a note from her sister last night:
"My sister got out of the hospital a week and a half ago.
From then until this past Saturday she was super excited, buying us
presents, just... so joyous that it was surprising to us.
Starting this past Sunday her mood has drastically changed.
She is confused, disoriented and seemingly lost. She thinks that
our grandma is alive (she passed away 9 years ago), that my niece is
turning 1 this year (she's turning 3).... and I could go on and on with
examples. She's just acting as when her kidney stopped working and she
wasn't going to dialysis. As though her brain is full of toxins.
I was wondering if you knew anything of these type of
situations after a transplant and if you could maybe post on the message board
and ask others.
She has a doctor's appointment tomorrow, but I was hoping
maybe you could help."
I told her it might be dehydration, but I would call the transplant team right away.
She has been going 2 days a week for follow-up so it seems as though they would be on top of this.
I guess it could also be some of the other meds she is taking.
Any ideas?

We can guess all day but this isn't normal behavior for a transplant patient or anyone else. She should be seen and evaluated to determine just what is happening. Many things could be causing this but since she is newly post transplant the team should be involved here.

Karol, she should be seen straight away. I am sorry she is having a hard time. I have read her story on living donors. I wish her all the best.

Hope all goes well, this sounds very odd.
I'm finding I'm having minor mood swings, getting grouchy at my husband sometimes, but nothing like that. A little confused at times, but I do mean a LITTLE, and that could be medication.
At two weeks, I thought they'd have her going to clinic far more than 2 days a week still?? I went every single day for the first 2 weeks, including weekends and a public holiday. Then we skipped a weekend and went to 3 days a week. Still at 3 days, possibly down to 2 this week or next.

The patient had some seizures (which she is on medication for) but one was severe enough to cause her to fall and hit her head. Her sister sends this:
"My dad called a neurologist at UCLA that knows about Netrazepan which is
the medicine she takes. HE told my dad to increase it 5mg
twice a day (to 40mg total) - my dad had the same conclusion that her
kidney was just filtering it out quicker than the dialysis had been."

I'm no doctor but it sounds like it may be a medication problem. When i had my transplant my mind seem to be clearer. I didn't take anything that would change my mood or my mind. I hope she is OK.

i am a 51 year old male on dialysis for 3 years now. This is my second time. My brother donated a kidney to me about 13 years ago. I found this site on another site. I had to laugh when i saw what it was called. I hope to meet people from all over to talk about dialysis.
