A few friends went up to Saskatchewan to Tobin Lake Resort here is a picture of the type of fish they where getting thru the ice. I missed this trip wish I could have gone. This is a Northern Pike 45" and approx. 33# What a nice fish to pull out of a 12" hole in the ice...Boxman

box -- sorry you missed the fishing trip with your friends.  But, hey, there will be another time for you (what's that they say about "more fish in the sea"?).  And, when you go, being the expert fisherman that you are, I'm sure you'll pull in a fish that makes the one in the picture look like a guppy!  (But, man, what a fish that one was.)

This species of fish has very sharp teeth. I never caught one that big but, when you finally get it close to the hole you have to stick your hand down into the freezing water and try and grasp behind the gill. No doubt he will do some head shakes so sometimes it takes awhile, but it is Fuuuunnn. You then check to make sure you have all your fingers   ;D...Boxman

Boxman... fingers okay in the hole ---- but don't you dare stick your foot anywhere near that hole!  You need to keep the toes you have left. :rofl;

Oh my gosh! I can't believe the size of that fish.
Sorry you had to miss out. Sounds like your friends are really wonderful though, because they kept you posted.

My gosh - what a fish.  Sorry you missed it Box.  My son is a big fisherman.  If he has an extra hour he will set
the alarm clock and go fishing.
Your time will be coming soon.

I had to look again. Thought maybe I was mistaken on just how large that fish is.
I have done some fly fishing (my husband loves to fly fish) and there is just no way a fly fishing rod could ever hold onto a fish like that.
There's probably all kinds of special equipment neede to land those monsters.

Hi Sunny, We use a 27" rod with a minny spinning reel. The rod is medium action with 8lb. test line and usually an eight to twelve inch steel leader tied to the end of the line then attach the bait. These northerns have very sharp teeth and would chew right through a normal line. It takes a good while to tire out one of these monsters before you can ice them. But a lot of fun...Boxman
