Hi, i'm Carol, 36 year old from Iva, SC.  I'm the mother of 2 daughters one 17, the other 9 and the stepmother of a 8 year old daughter.  I just got married in Dec to a wonderful man named Billy.  In Feb I went to the ER and found to have a UTI and was sent home with meds that didnt work in March I went back to ER and was giving another med and again didnt work 2 days later went back to the ER was hospitalized at this time and on March 24, 2008 I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Failure.  I was devistated.  And then to find out i'm already at stage 4 truely got to me.  At first I thought am I gonna die?  I didnt know what to think.  I got out of the hospital and got home and jumped online started reading everything I could get ahold of.  Now i'm seeing a Nephrologist and waiting on him to decide what the next steps are for me.

 :welcomesign; to IHD Carol.  There is a lot of collective wisdom and experience with kidney disease on this site so I hope you will find some answers, some support and some laughs here with us.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

March 2001 - December 2001 - Hemo Dialysis
December 2001 - Kidney function improved dialysis no longer necessary
October 2006 - Kidney function started to decline
May 9, 2007 - Listed at Baylor Dallas and Fort Worth
October 12, 2007 - Started PD
May 13, 2008 - Kidney Transplant from a deceased donor

 :waving;   I basically found out I had kidney disease by having a UTI, as well.  I was working for a doctor's office at the time and I had just come back from vacation.  The doctor's office has an in-house lab so the lab tech suggested we do a quick urine test.  At that time I was showing 4+ protein.  I had absolutely no idea what that meant, but went to a nephrologist
anyway.  This was the early 90's.  I'm pre-dialysis, but currently on "the list" and testing living donors as we speak!

Oct 41, 2007 - Got fistula placed.
Feb 13, 2008 - Activated on "the list".
Nov 5, 2008 - Received living donor transplant from my sister-in-law, Etta.
Nov 5, 2011 - THREE YEARS POST TRANSPLANT!  :D

Welcome sweetsouthernrose to ihatedialysis.com,

Sorry things are coming at you fast but you came to the right place to learn as much as you can about CKD and ESRD. Read as much as you can and try to learn as much as possible before your next visit with a Nephrologist, it always easier to make decisions based on knowledge. Hope you are adjusting well and try to stay positive.

Thank you so much for all the support.  When I found out I felt like noone understood what i'm going threw.  People would say whats wrong and when you tell them you have CKD their faces look like someone just died and they say oh my i'm so sorry  and they say it as if i'm half way under.  Even one lady Ive known for awhile looked at me and said oh when you get on dialysis you only have about 5 years to live, where she got this from is beyond me but I was like thanks for the encouragement.  I get so frustrated when my family doesnt understand that I get tired faster than i use to.  People say you use to be so outgoing and cheerful always never down and now I have no energy and never go anywhere but they dont realize I do go places  but its doctors doctors doctors.  When they did my MRI they found I have a 5 CM cyst on my right side which I have to have surgery at the end of the month for, and they found a bulge in my lower back.  Man I have had it throwed at me in just a few months.  I went from being a healthy never go to doctor, never take any meds, to now wake up hurry and eat something just so I can take my meds.  Life seems so different than before but I'm thankful I found this site and I'm thankful I have more family that I know I can count on.  :grouphug;

So glad you found this site.  I, too, went from being the healthy one doing everything to suddenly having ESRD.  Being a member here has helped me overcome my fears and given me power.  I think you will find lots of support and great information.    Welcome to the best site!

The more you read on this forum the more educated you become about your kidney problems and I've found that the more you know the less you fear. The love and support you get from many people on this furum is fantastic so feel free to ask any questions you like, if you need to have a rant go ahead we'll listen because we understand and remember with IHD your never alone. :grouphug;
