horseshoe kidney

At one time in John's life they said he must of been born with only one kidney after having an Xray for Prostrate cancer. However when last January when he had acute renal failure on having a CT scan they said he had a horseshoe kidney. One part of this had to be removed as that had cancer also.  I tried many times to try to see the Xrays but it was always on it's way to another ward as it was of great interest to lots of the doctors.  I was just wondering if anyone has a picture of a horseshoe kidney and how many of them are about!!!!

I just looked. It happens in one and 400 births. The two kidneys are fused. I wanted to find a picture, but I have to go to work.

Hi Thanks once again, went to the sites and found some very good information and pictures.  No wonder John was so long in the operation
(8 hours) They thought they might of had to dialysis him after the op. and every thing was in place ready for it, but he didn't need it I'm glad to say but now he is well on the way for having it.

Glad he is doing ok.  I learn something new here everyday.  Horseshoe kidney - never knew about them.  The pictures are fascinating.  Hope things continue on a good path for John.

I'd never heard of one either.  I googled it and how interesting.  My cousin's baby was born with a third kidney on top of one of his and it is growing but won't get as big as the other two.  Causes no problems, is just extra.  Nature is an amazing business.
