I thought this was a good enough story to share.. *G*
I was a mere 14 years old, and I was in the IWK Children's hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.. there's 2 sides to this one, so I'll tell mine first, then I'll tell my Dad's.. although his is much better... Anyway, it was about 4am when the two night nurses on the ward came in to my room and woke me up.. in my stupor, they asked me a question.. what is it that you wait for when you start dialysis? I didn't know... that's when they told me that there was a kidney for me.. I was in surgery by 8am.. they almost had to give it to someone else, though, because they needed parental consent to operate, and they couldn't find my dad.. they kept calling, and getting no answer... he was in the Ronald McDonald house in Halifax.. I don't know if they still do it or not, but at the time they would give parents who stayed there a pager... well.. at about 4am... Dad thought his alarm clock was going off... so he hit the button, and went back to sleep... then it went off again... he hit the button again, thinking it might be broken... he unplugged it... it went off again.. and that kinda freaked him out... then he heard the phone ringing downstairs.. and he clued into what was going on.. the cool part about the whole thing was, before going to Halifax, he stopped in to visit his grandfather's grave.. and asked him to look out for me.. 4 days later, I was transplanted..
