Isn't it sad that the great race horse broke his ankles and had to be put down Sat.?
Almost seems like cruelty to animals doesn't it?

I've been around horse racing for a long time and I've never seen a severe injury happen like that one did.

Flip, like you, I've seen quite a bit of racing and this was such an unlikely accident.  Sometimes you do wonder how horses can run on those slender legs.  I miss being around Keeneland and The Big Red Mile.    Very sad to see a magnificant animal have such bad ending.

One leg can be fixed quite often. This filly had compound fractures of both front ankles. Euthanizing was the only option in this case.

I understood that this horse finished the race and then manifested two broken front legs. Am I correct? If so, how does a horse finish a race with two broken legs?

So sad to hear about the poor filly.  I wish there was a way to fix those fractures so that euthanasia wouldn't be the only option.

She actually broke down about 1/4 mile past the finish line. There will be an intensive investigation.

You're a Kentuckian Flip, did you get to go?
I was at Frankfort, KY with a friend to an Elvis competition over a year
ago and I loved riding thru the areas where there were beautiful horses.
rolling hills, so nice.
