Anyone who reads this please think seriously about giving the gift of life, become a Kidney donor and give someone their life back.

At least sign your donor card, if something were to happen, you could save several lives and bring happiness to others and their families.

I've thought about it.  I would gladly give a chunk of liver to someone in need.  It would sort of be a payback thing for what I've received already. 

I once tried to donate blood but they wouldn't accept me, not because I'm a transplant patient but because I take immunosuppressants.

Yup, the Red Cross won't even take my blood either.  Thankfully, the blood drive never turns down cookies, though!

Actually this thread was intended for the guests who come here to read, or members who can give. Healthcare professionals who read here daily but are not members. About the only thing that is still worth giving in my body would probably be my corneas. MIL just had a cornea replacement done and she is 86 yrs old and going strong.( she's healthier than I am)(how embarrassing) but good for her.

Great idea, Sluff.  Can I add a link?  People can easily sign up to be donors through www.organdonor.org, rather than waiting until it's time to renew the old driver's license.

May I also add that just signing a donor card or your license is not enough. Your family needs to know of your wishes, since they will be the ones approached when the time comes to make the decision. PLEASE make sure your family knows you want your organs to be donated!

I am trying very hard, and losing weight so I can give my husband one of my kidneys- if I am not a match- I have heard of donating to someone who has a donor that also doesn't match, and sometime it invovles several couples, all donating to each other. To try to get him a kidney that way. After that I'm not sure-except if I die- then I am an organ donor, and I have made sure my family knows it so  they can take all parts and skin-whatever they could use.

Here's more info about 2 websites concerning kidney swaps:

1.) Paired donation is a procedure that allows individuals who wish to give a kidney to their loved one, but cannot because they are incompatible (they have the wrong blood type or their loved one has immunity to their kidney).  In paired donation, the donor and recipient are matched with another incompatible donor/recipient pair and the kidneys are exchanged between the pairs.  http://www.paireddonationnetwork.org/

2.) Now for the good news. There is a new way to overcome this problem: an arrangement called paired donation. Kidney paired donation matches one incompatible donor/recipient pair to another pair with a complementary incompatibility, so that the donor of the first pair gives to the recipient of the second, and vice versa. BTW, I also will donate my remaining organs upon death and have that designation on my drivers license.

In my state (TN) there's a registry. When you sign up you don't have to worry about your family having to deal with the issue. It's a done deal after you register. Other states might have this, too.
