Karma

Maybe it's because I live in Santa Cruz, CA -- land of the hippies, but I get soooooo tired of hearing people talk about karma.
The running theory is that people end up with sicknesses and diseases because of "karma."
I heard it again this week when talking with a friend (she must have forgotten about my CKD) and this friend goes off on her theory that "so and so ended with
such and such illness because of bad karma." PLEASE!!!  I used to let these kinds of ideas pass by and say nothing, but I am finding I just can't tolerate this ignorance anymore.
So, I stood up for us all (especially myself) and told her," I don't buy it. People do not deserve their illnesses or diseases. Good people get sick."
When I first contracted kidney disease ( 7 years ago), I wracked my brain for months wondering what it was I did wrong in my life to deserve it. NOTHING! I did nothing
wrong and I didn't deserve it. But sh---t happens.
So next time someone talks about bad karma or God's punishment, I will definitely not shy away from setting them straight. I am just too fed up with people
blaming the sick for being sick.

I sort of agree and disagree. I dont believe people get ill because of karma but i do believe in karma. For example , when i started dialysis my husband left me and my friends stayed away. Now further down the line my friend who was always to busy for me and never called has needed my help because she is getting a divorce now ..so isnt that karma ? But the illness thing is rubbish otherwise there would be a lot more sick people if it was because we had done something bad, what about all the murderers , robbers etc not all of those are ill, but they are bad people. Some people will always have a theory as to why people get ill ..till it happens to them!

Anyone who believes in the delusion of Karma should take a look at the death and suffering of innocent children and then put this belief to the test. I can't see how any rational person could maintain such a belief in the light of of the above context.

I completely agree with you, Sunny. I wound up with an e.coli infection before my first birthday, which led to my CKD. I was on dialysis at 6 and had my first transplant before age 8. What could I have done in the first 10 months of my life to deserve a lifetime of this??

Thankfully I live in a place where we don't hear much rubbish like that!

the fact is that our actions can cause us grief or joy, depending on our nature. so, there is an element of truth to the concept of karma. but, there is a lot more to just being a good boyscout and eating your vegetables when it comes to health.
cause and effect are realities that we all deal with, but to insinuate that everything that happens to us is because of what we have done in the past is just another attempt to make sense out of the chaos that life really is, like religion or the many offshoots of it.
the truth is that everyone has to die of something. dying of 'old age' is mostly a myth, a lie. usually, an organ fails, a disease manifests or an accident occurs.
it would be even more of a crowded planet if all disease was wiped out, starvation was ended and war was no more.
no need to take it personal. life goes on....
