Going the extra mile-literally

I had an incident today that really made me feel good about my dialysis centre and the people who work there. I was in the centre today getting antibiotics for my mild peritonitis, and about half way back to my house after I left, my psychotic motor scooter broke down. I still don't know what happened, but it just stalled and wouldn't start, no matter what I did. I was still several miles from my house, and the route back home and back to the centre consists of busy streets with no sidewalks. I don't have trouble riding my scooter or my bicycle on them, but trying to walk my heavy scooter that distance on those streets would have been very dangerous. To make things worse, I was basically stranded in a shopping mall parking lot that has seen its fair share of crime. I couldn't take a cab the rest of the way, because I couldn't just "abandon" the scooter. Out of desperation I called my nurse to ask if anyone there who has a truck might be leaving soon. She said she would check, and she called me back a few minutes later, and she told me that the equipment tech was on his way with his truck. The thing that surprised me was that it was NOT time for him to leave. He actually got permission to leave work, came and picked me and my piece of crap, uhh I mean, scooter up, drove me the rest of the way home, and went back to work. He absolutely did not have to do that, but he chose to because he wanted to do what he could to help a patient. Whenever I encounter sucky medical professionals, I will try to remember this little incident as one of my best experiences with a professional in the dialysis field.

  there are some decent poeple in this world, it's just that only the bad ones make the headlines.  Good on that guy

Adam, you have been having some of the worst luck lately.  I'm glad it all worked out for you.  That was one of those many random acts of kindness that we so seldom hear about.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed (sure makes typing difficult) that you'll be back on PD real soon!

I know what it's like to have a scooter break down.  Even though I'm in pretty good shape, pushing a bike for any amount of time (dialysis patient or not) is incredibly tiring.  I doubt there are many Dialysis clinics that offer this kind of complete patient care.

Thank you for reminding me there are still some people who still go into medicine to help people and not just collect a paycheck.
