Ouch that hurt!

My poor hand is a bit sore tonight
I had a clinic today and of course they wanted a blood sample from me. Sad to say i have terrible, fine ,veins which are hard to find, so i have it taken from the back of my hand. Ahem it took 15 mins of the needle being in the back of my hand and moved around to get the vein, needless to say my hand is already starting to go a nice shade of blue/black! Anyone else have problems giving blood samples ? ,

Oh my, KS. I hate that. Yeah, lately I've had a hard time giving blood for my samples. And it hurts!!! Especially when they do it
on the hand!!! Do you have an ice pack on it? That might help.

KICKSTART, My husband has the same problem, he has no viens left. This last time at the hospital, they had to draw labs out of his leg. When I took him to GP, the nurse there told us to hold pressure on it for a few mintues and it won't swell or bruise so much. Try it next time. Take care and put some ice on your hand.

I know that hurts, especially if they hit a nerve.

No veins left, Kaiser lab sees me and they run screaming to the back of the lab! Hehehehe! I hate it when they have to get blood in the hospital. They always send the idiots in to get blood from me. I told one person to get out. Then the nurse cam in and asked me what my problem was. I told him to send the professional next time to me. He left me alone after that!

Hi Kickstart,
Each time I go for my clinic visit which is monthly, they always do blood work. It really depends on the person drawing the blood. You really have to be an expert phlebolomist to take my blood. Just like you said, I have little veins and they like to move and collapse. I can't stand it when they think they got it and stick you. Unfortunately, they miss. To make up for missing the vein, they try to move the needles in and out side to side. Then they ask "Am I hurting you?" No DAH!! I just like to say OUCH!!! Sorry, I'm getting upset.
Anyway, the clinic has me figured out and they always bring in the expert nurse. She can get my blood with one stick using the butterfly needles. But, she has to go after the deep vein. It works thank goodness.

Yes, have them use the butterfly pediatrician needles and line. Works great.

Now that I only have one arm that they can take blood from thanks to the two
fistulas in my left arm it seems like my vein in the right arm is harder and harder to
take blood from. I always want to tell the vampire "Just come any MWF after 5 pm to the
unit and you can freely have all my blood you want".

I've had a graft in my right arm since 1979, and it has not functioned since 1981, so ever since then, I've had only my left arm. The transplant team has recently taken a liking to my hand, and it HURTS! This morning they tried a little vein which tends to either roll or blow, but never reliably gives blood, and my whole arm hurts tonight. Yep, KS, I know exactly what you're talking about!

When my mom was in emergency for her heart condition, they tried to put an iv in the top of her hand because they couldn't find a vein anywhere else. The nurse blew her vein - it was very painful. Mom was given a heat bag and that seemed to bring it down pretty fast. Still was black for a couple days though. Hope you are feeling better Kickstart!
