I'm most concerned with my weight and taking some off - and worried that they'll find something else wrong with me that would prevent me getting on the list.

I had a great doctor tell me something that helped me through the testing process.  He said that they weren't trying to find something to rule me out, just making sure I was ok for surgery, etc.  He told me if they found something, they would "fix" it and we would move forward.  Over three years on the list and I am going through the yearly annual tests to stay on the list.  And I worry each time!  You will do fine!  I am excited for you that the process has begun.
