I live in the States. My 90 yr old mother recently started dialysis.  Originallly. due to her age we decided against dialysis. however about 2 week agos the effects of euremia became unbearable to her so she agreed to try dialysis.  So far we're impressed with the results, we'd heard sooo many horror stories we were expecting the worse  She has regained control of her muscles, is more lucid, can speak, eat and occassionally even makes it to the loo on her own.  Her first 3 emergency sessions in the hospital were completely free from any side effects.  She's now had her 2nd session within the dialysis center as an out patient and is experiencing cramping. I'm trying to isolate the source of the cramping. My goal is  for her to comfortable with or without dialysis in these twilight yrs.

cramping is usually caused by taking off too much fluid and basically causing you to become dehydrated. they releave the cramping by giving you saline. you don't have to take of whatever they reccomment you can set the amount. as an example if she cramped at 3 kilos try 2.5 the next time. remember you (or your mother) is in charge not the techs.

I commend you for allowing your mother to make the decision on doing dialysis or not. I could only hope to live into those twilight years but regardless of age everyone deserves to live as long and comfortable according to the plan by our higher power.

Welcome to our community!  We are so glad that you decided to join us on your mother's behalf. My dad died of kidney failure at just that age because in our country they made the decision that he was old enough to die!!  Our family doctor cried, because my dad was a very alive person, in good health, except for his kidney failure.  so I am so glad that your mother took the option that she had.  Dialysis does make you feel better, as was my experience.  At least you will have more time with her this way.   As thegrammalady said, cramping usually comes when too much fluid is taken off, so watch out for that.  Sometimes it takes them a little time to work out what is your optimum dry weight.    Continue to read, and also continue to post.  We want to know how your mom is doing.  So please give us frequent updates.

  the  cramps  are  from  to  much  fluid  coming  off,what  her  doctor  needs  to  do,  is  to give  her  an  ibw(ideal  base  weight)  and  stick  to  that  weight  as  best  she  can,  anything  over  will  be  taken  off  each  treatment,unless  she  still  pees  considerably  that  means  fluid  intake  is  at  a  minimum

Welcome, Thalia!  I'm with everybody else on the cramping thing.  My husband says they are awful!!  It is the pulling of too much fluid!  I re-state what others have said...You and your mom have control over how much they set the machine to pull off of her.  Don't let them determine it!  Speak up for her -- even if you think you're being pushy.  I have been called a b--tch because I INSISTED that my husband knew his body better than anyone else and made them do as he asked.  The way I see it, I'd rather be a b--tch than let my husband suffer.  You may have to experiment with how much to pull off to get her dry weight right.  Hang in there.  I'm glad she's still here and you're here with us now.

Welcome Thalia! I care for my mother who is pre-dialysis. This site does exactly what you said 'empowers' us all when dealing with the many complexities we face at one time or another.
