It stinks...BUT..

Renal failure bites, there is no doubt about that, but despite all of the downers I feel great.  I went to first shift today (holiday schedule) and then made it to work by 10am (usually there by 9:30), somehow I was in high spirits, when usually after treatment I just want to crash.  Managed the restaurant all day and re-finished two wooden tables, sanded them down and stained them (productive day).  After work I came home for a change of clothes and check the e-mail, then headed out to the gym.  Ran 40 min on the indoor track and did my weight training.  I cant wait for the next time a social worker tells me I shouldn't let dialysis control my life and I should be appreciative (that's what mine told my Uncle on his visit).  I don't have to like dialysis, I just have to do it.....and I do.

You sure can pack alot into one day!  Good for you!

I managed the gym this morning, the bank shortly after and I was done.  I've never been a daytime napper, but I slept through most of the weekend and almost fell asleep again today.  I am definitely not looking forward to dialysis, but I would be interested in gaining some of my energy back.

wow what a packed out day.

George i had taken the same approach to dialysis as you have, and it had kept me physically and mentally ready for my transplant. You don't let dialysis rule your life.. its wonderful.

Way to go George! I have stairs, a 6 foot dining room table, a kitchen table and chairs, a dresser and a book shelf all waiting for me to refinish them (or finish refinishing them!), but I just can't get up the energy (or enthusiasm) to do it! Lately, I just can't stop sleeping, be it night or day! I slept all day yesterday after sleeping a full 9 hours the night before. Then, I slept until 10:30 this morning! I wish I had your energy. Can you share it?

That's great George!  I envy your attitude and zeal.  I'm retired and try to keep my energy levels up and mind sharp by volunteering and getting out of the house.  My energy levels are usually good but for some reason I can't seem to endure vacuuming or doing laundry.  It must be related to my kidney failure. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it...)

I have the same problem! But add cooking and dusting to the list!

Yeah. Anyone who says we have to like this can bite my...well, you get the idea. I've been back to work after being off 2 weeks, what an adjustment!!! No more day time naps, darn it!! Ah well. At least I have a job I love (cataloging books!!!!!!)

Oh yeah! It can cause inablility to do dishes, fold laundry and wash windows. it is very bleak.

   Yeah, I figured since he suddenly forgot how do stuff around the house as soon as we got married, it must be normal, so I forgot too!

Well done George you certainly seem to have good energy levels. I feel a bit guilty when I read about how much exercise some of us do on this forum because for the last few years i've become  physically lazy. It's not something I'm proud of, I wish I wasn't because my energy levels are still good. It's just that I find most kind of physical exercise bores me rigid. I don't like gyms, (nobody speeks to each other, just bury themselves in their Ipods)

In the summer I started cycling  the 6 miles to work and back and although I felt exhilarated at the end of the journey, the journey itself just bored the s**t out of me so I quit doing that and got back in my car.

I know that if I was a bit more active I could probably loose some weight and generally improve my fitness levels but I can't seem to get the enthusiasm to do it. I just wish I could get motivated to optimise my fitness while I still have the energy to do so. But well done to those who are.

I had this thought as I was leaving the gym tonight, on my way to the car.  I'm not sure where it came from, I guess I was just feeling good.  I thought to myself that no matter what happens to me I gotta feel good about my life.  No doubt the renal failure sucks, but I never have and never will leave anything on the table.  I have sucked the marrow out of life and got it for all it was/is worth.  So many thing that people stress over are nothing more than trivial to me anymore.  When someone complains about their life because of this and that I sit back and smile.  I do not smile because of their trouble, that is actually somewhat saddening, but I smile because I realize that I am free of all the things that so many are hurt by.  I feel free of attachment to possessions and I feel free of expectations that todays society imposes.  Now if I could only be free of that damn machine!!!  Oh how sweet that would be.........
