Hi

My name is Joan and I have been on dialysis for three years.  I am 60 yrs old. Married the 2nd time for 10 years and have one son from previous marriage. Was married for 23 years when he died from cancer.  I have one grandson who is 5 yrs old and a wonderful daughter-in-law who takes care of me when I am in need.

When I began dialysis I was on three days a week for four hours each day. Now I am down to twice a week and only two hours each.  My kidneys were damaged when I was 'eating' ibuprofen for a very painful condition I had.  They have since begun working well enough so that I just have to have my blood 'cleaned' twice a week.

I feel very blessed that I only have to go such a short time. I do have issues with it however because I don't want to go at all. Especially now since I hardly ever feel sick from it anymore.

Anyway....that's who I am.  I am anxious to meet all others.

Hi Joan, welcome to ihatedialysis.com.  That is great that you are able to cut back on your dialysis sessions, have they said that maybe soon you will be able to get all your kidney function back and perhaps stop going at all?  I hope that happens for you soon.   How awesome of your daughter-in-law to take care of you, she sounds like a gem.  and i am sure your grandson keeps you busy too  :clap;.   It is great to have you here with us and we look forward to hearing more from you soon.  Good luck to you and please do not hesitate to post any questions, comments and/or concerns of your own  :2thumbsup;

Goofynina and Epoman - Gone But Not Forgotten

Welcome to our community!  We are so glad you decided to join us.  I must confess to feeling a bit jealous - down to twice a week and only two hours!!!  I would give my eyeteeth for that!  But I am very happy for you, and like Goofynina, I hope that you will finally not have to go at all.  This is interesting, because just last week we were discussing under what conditions people are able to stop dialysis all together.  Continue to post and to interact with us.  You will find this site an excellent place for support.  We have become a real bonifide family.  So welcome to the family! :grouphug;

To answer Glitters question:  I had a bladder condition that caused me extreme pain. I was taking four ibuprofen every four hours to be able to continue to work. I had no idea I was damaging my kidneys.  The wonder is that when I began dialysis the bladder condition disappeared! Thank God - I don't think I could have stood having dialysis and still be in such awful pain. I would tell anyone to be very careful when taking ibuprofen.  It is okay taken in normal doses but be careful not to take it like I did.

Oh, my .. this sounds just like me, but I was popping them for back pain.  I look back and realize that My Dr. in Memphis (15 years ago) must have suspected something because he had me go in for a kidney X-ray and had me doing the 24 hour pee-test once a year, but the SOB never told me what he was suspecting!  So, here it is 15 years later and I'm on Dialysis!  :(
