My friend Patti sent out an email:
"I have what doctors say is
a 90% likely malignant tumor on my right kidney and the
entire kidney will be removed.  It was a stroke of luck that it was discovered
at this early stage.  It appears that it has not spread to
other organs or lymph nodes from the CAT scan, but it is
the size of a golf ball.
The surgery is tomorrow at 1 pm, and it looks like all is "go" to
remove the entire right kidney with a 2 1/2" cut.  He will
bag it and pull it out in hopefully 3 hours.  My left
kidney appears to be doing most of the work already so this is
the best case scenario to remove it intact.  He is certain
my life will be back to normal in a couple of weeks.  The
bad news is I must eliminate sugar and animal fat from my
diet - there goes my weekly porterhouse steak!  The good news
is I can still have my expensive (HA) red wine in
 moderation, of course. "

I told her I thought they may have her reduce her protein, but I have never heard about total abstention from red meat and sugar. Anyone else?
I pray all goes well and she's back on the tennis court soon!

my husband had one kidney for 25 years - once he recovered from the accident that cost him his other one he had no dietary restrictions at all, and in fact was a crazy meat eater-now he did get cancer in his remaining kidney 25 years later- but the only thing ever mentioned as to cause of the cancer was smoking cigarettes. I have seen some of the articles where they seem to waffle back and forth about wether you should only have moderat protein after a transplant- but a transplant is way different then just having one fully functional kidney of your own.

I met someone once that could not eat any meat at all because of liver problems. He was encouraged to increase his sugar intake. I don't know the reason for the increase in sigar.

Good Luck Patti!

Karol Rick's brother in law just got one of his kidneys removed because of the sanme problem, he is doing great and is cancer free. They never said anything like that to him.  :-\

Wishing you the best Patti.  :grouphug;

:yahoo; Just got this message today:

Patti's coming home!

Dear friends,

We got the pathology report back this morning on Patti's
kidney tumor.  It was an oncocytoma and 97% of them are
malignant. Patti's was NOT!  What luck.  We are buying a lottery
 ticket today.

If she can keep down some solid food for breakfast and
lunch the doc will let her go home this afternoon with only a
few cautionary notes.  She is weak but will follow her
normal life activities almost immediately, of course in
moderation (aren't we tired of that word?).

Thanks for all your prayers, messages, etc. but thanks also
for not burying her with phone calls since she really
wasn't able to talk much without getting exhausted.  She knows
you all were thinking of her and will get to some emails
 and return calls starting tonight.

Love to you all.
From the grateful Husband of Kidney Bean,
Doug
