Medicines with Increased Appetite side effect.....

How do you deal with the "Im SOOO hungry" feeling all the time? Both my Prograf AND Rapamune have this side effect and it makes it difficult to lose weight when all I wanna do is eat. No matter how much fiber I have in a day, i'm still feeling soooooo hungry due to the side effects.... Its not like I can just stop taking my anti rejection meds.... and im steadily gaining weight.. and gaining weight... and its depressing... everytime I go to clinic I havce gained at least 2lbs.. All the dr tells me is eat more rabbit food.. im like dude, thats all im eating half the time, every meal except breakfast I have a salad, I snack on carrots, bell peppers, celery... I fill my plate up with mostly steamed veggies... im goin crazy with feeling like I havent ate in forever even thouhg I could of just ate like 5 minutes ago.  Its easy to just say well dont eat if you just ate, and know its just the side effect of the medicine and your not truly hungry... easier said than done. When your feeling so hungry its not easy to ignore.

Sorry for the rant.. Its just fristrating.

angela, are you on predisone also...that made my daughter eat like a horse....when she got her first transplant..i remerber thats all she did was eat...ate me out of the house of home...i think that your body miss out so much when on dialysis..i might be wrong...we eat when our body and mind are on the way to recovery..i forgot when did you get your transplant...give it some time......give your a body a chance to heal

Hey, no I am not on Prednisone... WOOHOO, Was on it for years and years when I was in my teens, however I waasnt hungry like I am now and never gained weight back then.. 

I guess Ill give it more time.. I gained 7lbs from laast clinic appt to this one... 3 weeks apart, thats HORRIBLE. I had my transplant in january, so only 3 months ago.

You WILL lose the weight, well will kick your butt into gear :p

You won't for sure gain weight, if your on prednisone, you most likely will gain a little at first, but you will just need to change your diet around and eat healthy, and exercise.  If your like me and not going to be on prednisone, and get medicines that have a increased appetitie side effect, you just gotta eat healthy and exercise... and ignore that big bully saying EAT EAT EAT.

My downfall is, for the first 3 months I just ate everything in site because I could, not b/c I was hungry. Naughty me. Now that I want to eat healthy, im starving.. and I have a hard time ignoring that voice, hes pretty persistant :p

I decided I am gonna buy some baby carrots, and celery and stuff to put in little baggies to grab when that voice cannot be ignored anymore... Seems thats all I can do is give into the voice, so instead of feeding him sugar and everything bad, i'll trick him and feed him good for me foods, hehe... Hope it works..

Now that you have a working kidney drink lots of water to fill you up.  Also put the rabbit food in water.  It goes down easier when it is already wet.  Good luck.

Thank you Angela and Zach, knowing you have faith in me helps more than you will ever know, i have been trying but i am just not talking too much about it cuz i have failed once too many times, but this time i really really want to cuz in October i will be celebrating my big 4 0     and hubby has some special plans for me and i may just need to fit into my bikini BAHAHAHA, damn, sometimes i just crack myself up    Love to you both always,

Both times i was put on prednisone I could have ate the hospital out of food.  It was so embarrassing.  Friends were bringing me heads of lettuce and i was eating them like an apple.  I would be sitting u[p in my bed half an hour before each meal came with my knife and fork in my hands.  I really have no advice.  I didn't gain weight because i lived off rabbit food and once i could i drank tons and tons of fluid.  I did however gain a huge face.  Prograf never made me hungry.  Funny how different people have different symptoms.

Prednisone always made me hungry the first month i was on it, but I was on it 8 yrs straight non-stop, so I just got used to it and I guess never got attacked with the guner issue after the first month... hehe whew. I was on Prednisone after this transplant for the first 3 days, and those 3 days I ate everything in site, lol!

Well it might not be the Prograf, it could be the Rapamune, idunno, they both have the same side effects and its not like I can stop one to see which one is doing it, lol!  I am eating veggies like a maniac, but after 3 months of eating hot pockets and pizzas, I have to now lose what I gained... I also drink 3 liters of water alone everyday plus diet dr pepper... i have nno issues with getting enough fluid

I get that "I need to eat feeling too", I just get done stuffing my face then I want more. Glad to see I'm not alone.
