Hi
« on: August 30, 2007, 04:13:23 PM »

My name is Trudy and I have been on dialysis for 1 1/2years. (pd) I have polycystic kidney disease.  Both of my parents had it and died at an early age.  I have two children, a son and daughter, so far my daughter has the disease and also one of my 3 grandchildren has it.  My son would like to give me a kidney but I am having problems about it because I think my daughter or granddaughter will need it some day.  I am 55 and my daughter is only 35  and my granddaughter is just 11.  We do not have many family members to choose from.  I found out today that they are going to remove at least one of my kidneys because they are getting too big.  I really glad I heard about this site.  It will be nice to talk to others who are going thru similar things.

 :waving; Hi Trudy,
I think it's a good idea to explore donor options - there's a chance you will meet a donor if you tell enough people your story. My 2 sisters and my brother all have PKD, so none of their children offered to get tested when my daughter needed a kidney (I didn't inherit PKD, she has a faulty bladder) as they are apparently "saving" themselves to donate to their parents. I am assuming that because we never had a discussion until after Jenna got a transplant from an altruistic donor. Anyway, my point is that if your son is willing, you can have him tested. He might not be a match, but at least you'll know, and in the meantime you can keep an open mind to finding another donor. I hope the nephrectomy goes well and that you are feeling more comfortable afterwards. Best of luck to you!
