Waiting Time

Now most of my testing is done and I should be on the list by Jan. Of those who got a transplant, how long did you have to wait and what state did you recieve it.

We are in California. It took 3 months for Jenna to get listed after she started dialysis. She was told the wait was 4 -6 years, but a year later the wait had become 5 - 7 years here in Los Angeles. She also was listed in San Francisco and San Diego after being on the list for 3 years. She received 2 calls as a back up recipient about 2 months after joining the San Diego list (their wait time was said to be 3 - 4 years.) She ended up with a living donor - 3 yrs and 1 month after beginning dialysis.

i had all three of my transplants done at johns hopkins hospital in baltimore.  the longest i had to wait was 2 years, and that was with a high PRA count.  with living donors it is alot less time.  good luck.

I think it also depends on your blood type.  Type O has the longest waitlist.

Call me Mr. Complicated!
I had a kidney and pancreas transplant and my wait time was a year and two months, but would have been possibly shorter due to being taken off the list by mistake due to a clerical error. There were two people with the same name, one who got a transplant and one who didn't, ME! They took me off the list somehow thinking I had the transplant, yet somehow overlooked address, tissue type, and other things. My transplant center kept me informed how far up this list I was due to my health and then one day called asking me if I had a transplant somewhere else. Within two weeks of the start of that conversation, I had my transplant. Usually though a kidney and pancreas tx has a shorter wait time than a kidney alone. The last time I heard the wait time for a kidney transplant was between 2 and 5 years in Illinois.

First transplant was a live donor, no transplant list.

Second transplant, I officially got on the list in 2004. I received my perfect match transplant on Jan 14th, 2007. I first got on the list in Las Vegas, and then I moved to Iowa... I stayed on the list in Las Vegas until I was on the list here in Iowa. Once on the list here in Iowa, I signed a paper to transfer my time and only be on the list in Iowa. (I didn't really have anyone to watch my kids for that long of period if I would of had to go to Las Vegas.)

At the time of being put on the list in Vegas, I was told it was the shortest waiting time in the USA. I was told average 2 yr wait, and I am O+. Of course, the time was going up since everyone wanted to be on the list there due to it being short... so.. never got the call there. I got the call here in Iowa.. from my 15 yr old miracle boy.

At UNC, they told me the average wait is 6 years.  I am also listed at Carolina Medical Center and their wait is 2 years.  I am O blood type.  The time varies from center to center, so it does pay to research centers in your area.
