One cannabis joint as bad as five cigarettes: study

Smoking one cannabis joint is as harmful to a person's lungs as having up to five cigarettes, according to research published on Tuesday.

Those who smoked cannabis damaged both the lungs' small fine airways, used for transporting oxygen, and the large airways, which blocked air flow, the researchers said.

It meant cannabis smokers complained of wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness, the study by experts at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand found.

The researchers tested 339 people -- those who smoked only cannabis, those who smoked tobacco, those who smoked both and non-smokers.

The study found only those who smoked tobacco suffered from the crippling lung disease emphysema, but cannabis use stopped the lungs working properly.

"The extent of this damage was directly related to the number of joints smoked, with higher consumption linked to greater incapacity," said the authors of the report published in the medical journal Thorax.

"The effect on the lungs of each joint was equivalent to smoking between 2.5 and five cigarettes in one go."

The British government is considering whether cannabis should be reclassified as a more serious drug because of the dangers associated with stronger strains.

"The danger cannabis poses to respiratory health is consistently being overlooked," said Helena Shovelton, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation.

"Smoking a joint is more harmful to the lungs than smoking a cigarette and we have just banned people from doing that in public places because of the health risks."

Last week British researchers said using marijuana increased the risk of developing a psychotic illness such as schizophrenia.

it is important to know who funded this kind of research.
more often than not, these kind of reports are arranged to satisfy an agenda of some kind, either political or financial.
too much of anything will cause health problems of some kind.
we all need fluids, for instance,  but too much water and you will drown.
for me, cannabis provides quite a few benefits that i can't get so easily thru prescription drugs.
1-it helps me to get to sleep at night.
2-it increases my appetite.
3-it is a wonderful laxative.
4-it helps me to relax.
but, if i smoke too much, these benefits disappear, so that encourages me to maintain a degree of moderation.
it is true that the strains that are grown these days are quite stronger and higher in THC content as in the 'old' days. cross-breeding and hydroponic research has led to this. the level of tars in the smoke are much higher than in tobacco. but, there are no additives and chemicals added, as there are with commercial tobacco, so that is a plus, really.
compared to the pot of the sixties and seventies, ('cannabis sativa') the newer strains ('cannabis indica')
allows one to smoke much less to get a better effect than the old stuff.
newspapers and the media are full of garbage, usually, so it doesn't surpise me that this kind of article should be around, nor that there are many who will believe it to justify their ignorance.

same ol same ol.

by the way, the joint in that pic is a lot larger than a whole carton of cigarettes, so no wonder there is this kind of talk!

If you go to a smoke shop and buy an old school pipe like grandpa used to use you can buy carbon filters that go in the shaft of the pipe.  Yeah it reduces some of the fun stuff, but it also really cuts down on the tar.

Hmm, that picture reminded me of the Cheech n Chong album, the one with the huge paper. I think it was the Big Bambu album.
