Me with Baron von Fresenius

« on: July 30, 2007, 07:35:08 PM »

We just found out today that my grandmother is only weeks away from dialysis. We've all known it was coming for a long time, but it's still hard for all of us to know it's pretty much here. She went and visited the dialysis centre that she's going to be going to, and she met some of the nurses there. She will be going to the same centre her sister was at, and some of the nurses remember her from then. She wants to start out in-centre, but she would like to eventually switch to NxStage (she would have the same training nurse that I have). It's been especially hard I think for my mother because she's literally right in the middle, with her son (me), and now her mother both on dialysis. Please keep my grandmother and the rest of us in your thoughts and prayers, because even though I've been on dialysis myself for six months, it has still hit all of us like a freight train.

i am a 51 year old male on dialysis for 3 years now. This is my second time. My brother donated a kidney to me about 13 years ago. I found this site on another site. I had to laugh when i saw what it was called. I hope to meet people from all over to talk about dialysis.

Oh Adam. That is just crushing news for you and your mom. As everyone else saying, I'm glad you're going to be there for her, let her
know what's normal, and what to expect.  Are you all in the same area? If so, that's even better, you can give physical support as well
as emotional support.  :grouphug;

This has been heavy on my heart Adam. I was thinking of my Mom and how scared she was when she became sick and even though you have the same disease, somehow our generation has a way of understanding the process more than our parents and grandparents do, probably because of technology and what we learn from IHD. My prayers are with you and your grandma.

Thanks for all the kind words. I talked to her yesterday, and she asked me a lot of questions about what dialysis is like, and now that she knows a little more of what to expect, she's not quite so scared. It also helps that she already knows a lot of the nurses and techs  at the centre she will be going to. She's a very strong person, and we know that she's going to be fine, but it's still kind of scary right now. Again, thank you for all the support.
