Hi All,
Is there a certain "magic" number (like GFR= 20) that is needed in order to qualify to get on a transplant list?
Thanks!

My doctor didn't submit me until I had a GFR of 12.

My wife and I were told at a dialysis workshop in Binghamton, NY that I could get on a transplany list when my GFR was 20 or less

My GFR is 12 and my nephrologist hasn't mentioned it yet. I'm definitely bringing it up.

I was told the magic number is 20. I was listed at that number two years ago. Down to 12 now.  Talk to your doctor-- at least get the paperwork started. The process takes awhile.

Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR): Your GFR tells how much kidney function you have. It may be estimated from your blood level of creatinine. If your GFR falls below 30 you will need to see a kidney disease specialist (called a nephrologist), Your kidney doctor will speak to you about treatments for kidney failure like dialysis or kidney transplant. A GFR below 15 indicates that you need to start one of these treatments.

Stage                                  Description                    Glomerular Filtration Rate GFR)

At increased risk    Risk factors for kidney disease (e.g., diabetes, high
blood pressure, family history, older age, ethnic group) --- >> More than 90

1                    Kidney damage (protein in the urine) and normal GFR --- >> More than 90

2                    Kidney damage and mild decrease in GFR --- >> 60 to 89

    3                    Moderate decrease in GF --- >> 30 to 59

    4                    Severe decrease in GFR --- >> 15 to 29

5                    Kidney failure (dialysis or kidney transplant needed) --- >> Less than 15

Thank you all!  I keep hearing 20 is the threshold....and it seems like you all kinda agree....mine is 22 and dropping like a stone....and the neph is sleeping at the switch I'm afraid.....it seems I am the one who's suggesting the options to him and he's to busy or whatever to focus on my case cuz he's got a hundred more like me wating to see him every week....this is def not a time to place my "trust" in him...but I need his blessed signatures to get insurance to move the deal forward...ahhhhhhh!!!  Okay...now I feel better!!!
