My husband is about to go on kidney dialysis, and I don't know how to deal with it. I was fine with dialysis for awhile, then they mentioned a transplant, and found a donor, but now they will not do it at this time, because the transplant people want all of it set up ahead a time. He has other medical problems besides. One of his sister's match him in blood type and three antigens, but they will not do it because of the insurance, but they might later on, once we get everything sorted out. This is not very hard to go through, when I have to watch his health go down hill. We are told that he should not use any health supplements. He has five brothers and five sisters.

Hi, my name is keith. i am a member of the ihd family. This is the second time for me on dialysis. The first time i was married. My wife couldn't take the pressure of me on dialysis. Not for reasons you may think. She couldn't take it because it interupted her life. Having a loved one on dialysis is very stressful. In some cases you have to find transportation, insurance coverage, medication, etc... If your lucky some or all of these can be taken care of. once that is all done most people look into a transplant. I was stuck on dialysis for a year before they transplant my brothers kidney into me. We were both rather angry at their apparent reluctance. We had to sit down at a table and almost make them do it. My brother was a perfect match. The kidney lasted over 10 years. I think they drag their feet on sibling donors because they want the patient to go through dialysis for a long time. I believe that they want the patient to be so happy that they have a transplant that they will take extra care of the gift. Their minds are not like ours. Of course we will take care of our new kidney. who wouldn't. I hope that what i wrote in some way will help. You are a special person to stand by and stick with your husband. I know in his heart he needs that the most.

i am a 51 year old male on dialysis for 3 years now. This is my second time. My brother donated a kidney to me about 13 years ago. I found this site on another site. I had to laugh when i saw what it was called. I hope to meet people from all over to talk about dialysis.

Hi Jenny and welcome to IHD.  I think it has to do with Medicare.  You have to be on dialysis for 3 months before Medicare kicks in.  But, of course they aren't going to come out and say that.  "Yeah, ya need to be on dialysis so we get paid more money".  That wouldn't sound political correct!  You hang in there.  Dialysis isn't so bad if you know there is a transplant waiting around the corner.  Wow 5 brothers and 5 sisters??  Can they adopt me?

I just wanted to welcome you and let you know that you will be in my thoughts during this trying time.  Keep the faith everything will work out in the time that is needed by you and your husband.  Keep on being support for him and try to be understanding as there will be days that are good and some that are not so good.   :grouphug;

Today, I was told that once you get a transplant, and if that one works for 20 years and then it quits on you, you are back on dialysis again. And waiting for another kidney, and it is cheaper to go on dialysis. That is a lot of money to dish out. Happy trails. :thumbup;
