Wife's Medicaid Finally approved

Finally, it was initially denied a year ago for 'too much assets'.  I had to cash out a couple of annuities that we bought when she cashed out of the phone company in '02.  So I've been paying the Nursing Home and the Pharmacy a bit over 5K every month for over a year. That hurt, it's all gone now.

Re-applied in Nov and spent weeks getting letters asking for bank statements that I already gave them, only to be denied, again.  This time their reason was a 'lack of verification'.

I asked for a Hearing/Appeal.  A week later  I got a phone call from the Hearing Examiner,, a Lady, tellilng me that she had been reviewing the case and determined that I HAD supplied everything except a Dec Bank Statement, if I could fax that in she could get this done.  I got it done that day.

Now I'm waiting on a revised approval letter.  Seems someone incorrectly used an annual income in the place of a monthly which really jacked up what my monthly co-pay would be, like over 2K instead of only $200

AND they still need to back-date for Nov, the date of my application.  It will get done, most likely next week.

Been a lot of headache, but it least it's done.

Jeeeez Charlie, it nearly feels perverse to congratulate you for luckily getting an examiner less stupid.

The Medicaid applicant is limited to $2K in assets and the non-institutionalized spouse is limited to $109K, but can continue to live in the home with a Medicaid lien on it (no ability to use that part of the equity if you try to move), and must surrender all but about $70 a month to the nursing home to reduce the amount paid by Medicaid.

Being in a Medicaid nursing home without someone to buy you the little things is like being in prison with no outside money being deposited to your commissary account.
