Hi, I am Valerie! 74-year-old mother to ESRD patient Eric. This is my first time on a website like this. I am excited about sharing and learning from all of you.

A little background: Eric and I have been partners in this dialysis journey. Just over three years ago we started with a chest cath, then peritoneal dialysis at home. I tried unsuccessfully to learn home hemo, so we are doing in-center 3 times a week.

We are on a transplant list with a local transplant hospital, but are totally committed to pursuing a transplant with Wake Forest, which I believe is a better, safer hospital. We believe this is a viable alternative.

Thank you so much for accepting us into your community. We are excited to meet and talk with others in our situation.

My name is Bruce and I am the caregiver for my daughter Holly who is 31 years old and received her kidney transplant on December 22, 2016 :)
Holly's Facebook Kidney  page: https://www.facebook.com/Hollys.transplantpage/

Holly had a heart transplant at the age of 5 1/2 months in 1990. Heart is still doing GREAT!  :thumbup;
Holly was on hemodialysis for 2.5 years-We did NXStage home hemo from January 2016 to December 22, 2016
Holly's best Christmas ever occurred on December 22, 2016 when a compassionate family in their time of grief gave Holly the ultimate gift...a kidney!

Welcome to you both to IHD!

Browsing IHD you will find we have a number of Caretaker Family Members .  Dialysis affects far more people than the immediate patient.  Family and close friends are greatly impacted by the rigors of this insidious desease as well.

Eric is fortunate to have you helping him deal with this.

Sadly, TX can be quite a wait.  I Believe it is all a matter of time.  While TX is the best treatment, studying, learning how to better control diet and fluids to help keep labs as well as possible, can make a huge difference in staying as healthy as possible.

I hate to use the word exercise as that tends to make people cringe.  It's a terrible word.  I try to use 'physical activity' instead.  Physical Activity can be something as simple as taking a walk around the block.  No rush, no running or jumping, you don't even have to get all sweaty.  Unless you walked on a day like today here in Mid-Missouri.  It was HOT and HUMID, again.  I''m waiting for dark, it will cool off at least 25 degrees then.

Take Care,

How are things going for the two of you?
