But I thought he promised to protect it.

Last month Donald Trump and Paul Ryan attempted to gut Medicare and Medicaid to give
$1 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthy.
Thanks to your resistance, that effort went down in flames.
Now, rather than learning their lesson, Trump and Ryan are pivoting to an attempt to destroy Social Security to give tax breaks to the wealthy.

This plan is much more insidious than Trumpcare.
The Associated Press reports that as part of Trump's tax reform proposal, they are considering eliminating the FICA contributions that fund Social Security.
Because only the first $127,200 of wages are taxed, Trump's team are calling this a middle class tax cut.
But destroying Social Security's funding will hurt the very people Trump purports to help.

It was reported over the weekend that a GOP lobbyist close to Trump is promoting the plan to completely eliminate Social Security payroll contributions without a firm plan to replace Social Security's funding source.

Eliminating the payroll tax contributions is dangerous - Social Security has maintained it's universal popularity over the past 81 years because everyone pays in, and everyone benefits.
This dedicated funding stream also insulates Social Security from the annual appropriations process that Republicans use to squeeze other programs designed to help the middle class.

For decades, Republicans in Washington and Wall Street bankers have told us that Social Security is going broke - even though Social Security has a $2.8 trillion surplus and can pay out 100% of benefits for the next 17 years, and over 75% of benefits owed after that.

But Republicans' tax plans might be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
By starving Social Security of it's funding, they could finally receive their wish - replacing Social Security's guaranteed benefit with unstable Wall Street retirement plans.

DEMAND DONALD TRUMP AND REPUBLICANS IN WASHINGTON ABANDON THEIR ATTEMPTS TO DESTROY SOCIAL SECURITY.

I can't wait till this hits the senior citizen groups, Republican town hall meetings will reach new heights or lows of screaming citizens.  Plus the split in the republican congressmen will make this a doa bill.  Plus the only way to get through the Senate is to change the rules to block filibuster with 51 votes.  Do this and I will amost bet on a republican disaster next year.

There will be winners and losers with any change.  I think its fairly clear who the winners will be.

Not FAKE NEWS,  Trump just pulled a elimination of the Social Security tax from next years budget. It was being sold as a precursor to a major reduction in Social Security.

It seems that any news you don't like is, by definition, "fake news."  A very weak argument.

Well, if there is an over abundance in SS right now, it will help workers and employers who don't have to pay it for a year and then reinstate the tax again.  They cut it in half once when I was doing payroll but kept it the same for employers and it was a pain in the ass trying to figure it out every payday.

I will wait to see it in the passed bill before I believe it.

Any 'abundance' in the SS funds Congress will find a way to appropriate it and spent it on everything else.  Any never pay it back.

The elderly, and I suppose those of us on disability, are an easily identified, highly motivated block that doesn't have anything better to do with their time than vote.

The country will go bankrupt before Social Security is eliminated.

The Republicans couldn't even get it switched from a govt to private program, as the later would eliminate the income redistribution aspect of the program and give savers title to their assets.

The real threat is "means testing" for receipt of benefits, or elimination of the salary cap on taxable SS income (something they did with the Medicare portion of the tax years ago)
