City kidney disease site gets a million hits

Evening News Fri 26 Jan 2007

A WEBSITE which supports patients with kidney disease and was designed by doctors in Edinburgh is now so popular it is receiving a million hits a year.

The site was launched six years ago by staff at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary's renal unit and offers kidney patients information which gives them a greater understanding of their condition.

It was originally an information service but kidney patients can now also access medical test results and students and GPs also use the site.

The website at www.edren.org is now receiving hits from across the world and is used by almost 500 renal patients from Lothian and the Borders.

Michael Deoraj of the charity Kidney Research UK said: "Patients do come from their GPs overwhelmed with information so resources like this website that offer information that is clear and in layman's terms that people can dip in and out of are useful.

"We would definitely support initiatives such as this website and I am sure that a million hits a year shows that people are finding it very useful."

I figured that was probably the case.
I am curious, how many new IHD members have you gotten in the last 30 days?
Seems like a lot.

Another news article about that website:

Mon 16 Apr 2007
Kidney disease website proving a hit with patients

A WEBSITE providing information for patients who suffer from kidney disease has received one million hits in one year.

The NHS Lothian website, www.edren.org, the brainchild of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary's renal unit, was designed by members of the hospital's medical, dietetic and social work staff.

It was set up following concerns that many patients were not fully informed about their illness.

The site received more than one million hits last year. It is now recognised as a valuable tool for patients, staff and students.

Neil Turner, professor of nephrology at the ERI, said: "By providing patients with access to the information they need online, we are moving forward to a future where patients can access medical information at the touch of a button.

"The fact it is accessible to patients and health workers all over the world has contributed to the success of the site."

Officially launched in 2005 and piloted in four centres, Edinburgh Renal Unit was among the first centres to introduce the service for its patients and now nearly 500 renal patients from Lothian and the Borders use the site.
