New procedure for buttonhole scab removal?

Just got covered by Fresenius on the new procedure. We normally pull the needle and hold gauze on it for a few minutes(very little bleeding) then tape. We leave on for a few hours then remove. New method is to pull needle and hold gauze for a few minutes then tape. After a short period remove taped gauze and apply a little Mupirocin Ointment 2%. Tape again with new gauze(or band aid) and remove after about 4 hours. This is supposed to soften scab for next treatment for easy removal i.e., alcohol pad etc.(also targeted to reduce infections by using an antibiotic) We're in day one so too early to tell if there is improvement. Hope it works. I'll report back.

Interesting, I've always (6 years BH's) took the gauze of after an hour and put silver plasters on. Never had an BH infection. I'm not a fan of using antibiotic creams really (don't think you would get them here anyways.

I prepare for my canulation by taping 3 2x2 gauzes (folded) on each buttonhole and wetting each with 5cc saline from a prefilled flush syringe about an hour before treatment.    I used to home but had to stop due to family issues, but continue self-canulation at the clinic.

When I remove, I put a little dab (remember the Brylcream ads?) on a folded set of 3 2x2 gauzes, pull the needle, tape with one 8" length of paper tape, and remove about 30 minutes later.   

I always use a mask when canulating or de-canulating.

6+ years and no infections ..... yet.

We hold gauze for about 4 minutes then use a bandaid. When we start up again I mix a little disinfectant soap and saline on a gauze pad and place it on the site. Soak while machine is priming, then rub off any scab with a dry gauze pad. Works fine.
