Oh dear do u think I will get an infection

I was doing an exchange on the machine and was pushing the pin into the new cap.  When u do that there is always a little resistance pushing it in and my hand slipped.  My finger brushed over the exposed pin.  I went ahead and capped it and called the nurse.  She told me put a new cap on and she thought it would be okay.  I remember the nurse telling me about someone dropping the pin on the floor and they got an infection.  Well I don't see any difference as I'm sure my hands were somewhat contaminated.  I had on gloves originally but at that time they were not gloved. I'm really nervous.  .

Lynn - I do CAPD so I mightn't be of much help to you as I don't know the procedure for machines.

Did you go ahead and finish your exchange?

If you have caused some contamination, it should show up fairly soon.  Keep an eye on your temperature, and how you feel.  (You will automatically probably feel awful as a default position)  Check your drain bags for clarity.  Do you have the option to do manual exchanges?  Maybe for a day or two you could do manual exchanges so you can check your drain bags more frequently.  An infection usually shows up there before your temperature spikes.

As it's Easter you may have to go to ER as soon as something shows up.  My PD clinic would probably put me on antibiotics as a precautionary measure.  Maybe check again with your PD nurse.

When I got peritonitis it was FAST.  Felt fantastic in the morning, not hungry at lunchtime and by 4 pm it was on for young and old.  I am told it could take 72 hours to get to that stage.

I was on PD before my transplant....did you wash your hands before you put on the gloves?  That might make a difference.  Hope all will be OK.  I would do manuals for a couple days so I could check for cloudness too to be safe.  Best wishes.

I had this kind of thing happen to me a few times. I knew I had washed my hands. I kind of freaked out the first time but after that I didn't worry. It's too late to change anything once it happens so just keep going. Watch for signs of infection but you're probably ok.

if by pin you mean the end of he transfer set, the protocol when I was on PD was antibiotics and change of transfer set.  eas th sme for all dialysis units I used during the time I was on PD.
