stuttering?

I've learned from research that prolonged kidney failure can cause slight brain damage from the buildup of toxins between treatments.  I have started stuttering fairly badly the past year or so and ive been on dialysis a very very long time.  I was wodnering if this could be the cause, or if anybody else had heard of or experienced something similar? Anyway, thanks!

I notice that I have problems getting my arms around words when I'm speaking. Something I had never had an issue with before. I've seen some notes on studies indicating a loss of mental acuity being more prevalent in those of us with kidney failure, but they haven't gone as far as to link the two yet.

My stuttering was not kidney related, but happened when I was suffering from Lyme disease. The infection went for my brain and not only did I stutter, but I often could not even begin to talk.

Any affliction that affects the brain can bring on stuttering and/or aphasia.

I didn't stutter but I had terrible trouble remembering the right word. The toxins really do affect your brain. Sorry. You could try some of the usual stuttering techniques. Take a deep breath, speak slowly, avoid words you know are impossible for you.

I sometimes have trouble remembering nouns - often really common words like 'bread'.  I can tell you how to bake it, the ingredients, the temperature the oven should be, black tins are better than new ones, etc. etc.  It's a bit like playing charades for whoever is listening.  Adjectives and verbs are OK because you can just pick a close-meaning word as a substitute.

At my age I sometimes wonder if dementia is creeping up on me!

No, Mary, I do that too, so, I don't think it's an age thing.  If I can't think of the word, I'll stop for a minute to see if it comes to me and if it doesn't, I'll try to describe it if I can.  Usually by this time, the person I'm talking to is laughing at me, so I just say, "you know what I mean," and walk away.. *G*

I don't stutter but sometimes I do have trouble finding common words! Very frustrating!  I try to play word games on the computer but I don't know if it helps or not!

CebuShan, I have a Nintendo DS, and I play Brain Age on it.  If you keep up with the training (which I haven't been doing lately.. *G*) it does help with memory.  There's a site online, called Lumosity.com that claims to do the same thing.  I don't know if it's free or not, as I have yet to try it.  It's word and memory games

I have noticed my memory going downhill the last couple of years. I can lay my keys down and a minute later I'll completely forget where I put them. I don't have trouble with stuttering, per se, but I will often be in the middle of a sentence and forget a word and really have to think about what I was going to say. It's only been the last couple of years it's gotten bad and now it makes sense why! My family thinks I do it on purpose, not I have an excuse!! haha

No stuttering for the boyfriend, but definitely a slowing down of mental acuity. He forgets words and to do things.

I don't stutter but like others her words just skip my mind. I know what it is and looks like but the word i want to say is gone. It does come to me eventually but long after I have needed it. I have a very god memory and I have found even that has gone astray. That i will do things and not even remember. But i try to help my brain in a way but learn new things. My craziest adventure right now is learning British and Aussie slang. Easier that a hold other language but it makes my mind think. There are also memory game apps or other games to play and make my mind work in different ways. To hopefully not let the toxins take too much of it away.

Blokey doesn't have an issue with stuttering or memory and didn't when he was on haemoD.  However, I do have a memory/word problem in that I can completely forget mid-sentence what I'm talking about, I regularly forget words and if you ask me what I did yesterday my mind will go blank ... no hope for me if my remaining kidney decides to give up, eh?! (This isn't a side effect of donating a kidney; I've suffered with this for a long time but it has got noticeably worse in recent years; I wonder if some people are just more prone to it for some reason.)

yeah, I discovered that.  They give you three days, but their system is based on three months.  I'll stick to Brain Age.  I bought it second hand for about 5 bucks
