My name is Karen Kaeble. I am 59 and live in Hampton, NH.
This is my fourth time on D :'(. What happens is I get a heart cath and the dye affects the kidneys, I go on D for a few months then off D for a few years.....but not this time. Been on since April of this year. I am going for part one of a fistula procedure tomorrow (against my better judgement too) I have had two tessio caths , the first one "fell" out and the second one stays infected at the site. I was quite angry when I found out the other day all the things I couldn't dol with my right arm ..makes matters worse because I am a righty.
I'm glad this forum was created where one can understand all that is going on. My family and friends sure don't. Theyh really are waiting for the energetic Karen to come back...I pray so.

Hi, Karen, and welcome!  The good people here understand only too well what you're going through and will listen when you feel you need to rant.  There's also a lot of information here and support when you need it.  You've come to the right place for all of these things and for some laughs too.  All the best to you.

How come they will not use your left? If you didn't ask, ask! I am right handed so the surgeon told me he would use my left.

Diabetes -  age 7

Neuropathy in legs age 10

Eye impairments and blindness in one eye began in 95, major one during visit to the Indy 500 race of that year
   -glaucoma and surgery for that
     -cataract surgery twice on same eye (2000 - 2002). another one growing in good eye
     - vitrectomy in good eye post tx November 2003, totally blind for 4 months due to complications with meds and infection

Diagnosed with ESRD June 29, 1999
1st Dialysis - July 4, 1999
Last Dialysis - December 2, 2000

Kidney and Pancreas Transplant - December 3, 2000

Cataract Surgery on good eye - June 24, 2009
Knee Surgery 2010
2011/2012 in process of getting a guide dog
Guide Dog Training begins July 2, 2012 in NY
Guide Dog by end of July 2012
Next eye surgery late 2012 or 2013 if I feel like it
Home with Guide dog - July 27, 2012
Knee Surgery #2 - Oct 15, 2012
Eye Surgery - Nov 2012

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

1983 high proteinloss in urine, chemo, stroke,coma, dialysis
1984 double nephrectomy
1985 transplant from dad
1998 lost dads kidney, start PD
2003 peritineum burst, back to hemo
2012 start Nxstage home hemo
2020 start Gambro AK96

       still on waitinglist, still ok I think

~ Hello All, My names Marna ~

- 1995 - 12 yrs old found out my kidneys were both failing
- 1996 - Dec. 3 I received my 1st kidney transplant at age 13, after 7/mths on the waiting list
- 2005 - In Aug. transplant failed after 9.5 years, had to have a nephrectomy due to being very ill & massive hypertension
           - End of Aug. 1st time on dialysis
- 2006 - Had my fistula placed & ready to go
- 2010 - My little Miracle was born 6/mths into the pregnancy, weighing 2.4 lbs & 13.25 in long
          - Found out my PRA is 100% & I have antibodies that CAN'T be decreased
- 2013 - Oct. 2nd  *** I finally received my kidney!!! ***
          - Dec. 3rd I had 3.5 parathyroids removed, due to them interfering w/my new kidney.

Welcome Karen!  Realize Im late and so sorry for that.  I will be 59 soon too, so I understand a little about the age deal.  My husband has this disease, and in some ways, Iam tied to that with him.  We are use to it, and have excepted it quite well.

Karen  Give this site to your family and friends.  They can join or just read.  It will help them understand this new road you are on that "the OLD Karen" they knew may not be back for a while. That will make it easier for them to coop and support you.  Grumpy

Hello Karen! Welcome!

We're over here in Derry! Glad to see another person from NH on here, but sorry it's under such circumstances.

I too am curious why they are doing your right arm? Hubby has 3 failed fistulas, but they went for left arm first for 2 of the 3. Where are you going for your surgery?

Caregiver to Husband with ESRD.

1995 - Diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux and had surgery to repair at age 11. Post surgery left side still had Stage I VUR, right side was okay. Both sides were underdeveloped.
2005 - Discovered renal function was declining, causing HBP. Regular monitoring began.

March 2008 - Started transplant evaluation for preemptive transplant due to declining function.

September 16, 2008 - Transplanted with my kidney.
September 18, 2008 - Kidney was removed due to thrombosis in the vessels in and leading to the kidney.

October 2008 - Listed in Region I

May 2009 - Started in Center Hemo
January 2010 - Started CCPD on Liberty Cycler

June 15, 2012 - Kidney transplant from a 43 year old deceased donor
June 22, 2012 - Major acute rejection episode and hospitalization began
June 27, 2012 - Nephrectomy to remove kidney after complete HLA antibody rejection. Possibly not eligible for another transplant, ever again.

Now what?

I don't think anyone really can understand this unless they have done it.  I was set up for dialysis 2 times for the stomach but too painful. I then got setup with the artificial in my arm. Got out on Friday and then the following Friday got called for a transplant. Was only on the list for 4 days!  A miracle in itself. My brother had been on D for a few years and I felt horrible that it wasn't him that got the kidney.  I never knew the hell he was going through because I never experienced it after all.  He never really complained much about it.  I know he didn't like the heart cath but nether do I...LOL  He passed a few years ago after he got his transplant (had it about 2 yrs)  he managed to catch every known super bug to man!  My Mom did in home dialysis but dropped the tubing on the floor and put it in the sterilization chamber but it never did the sterilization.  She got very Ill and passed at age 52 back in 1985. 
So all in all I guess you have to walk in our shoes to "get it"... Hang in there. Hope things get better for you.  Always here if you'd like to chat.
