Hey everyone. New to the site and new to dialysis. Quick rundown of me. March 2012, doctor tells me your kidneys are functioning at about 12% and I would need dialysis soon. My mind set at the time; just turned 25 and started my career at a new job, wasn't feeling any kind of symptoms. Doctor attempts to offer Peritoneal education. Totally freaked out about the idea of being 25 and on dialysis, so like an idiot I ignore doctor recommendations and proceed living life like most people my age. Come October I feel like total sh!t. Legs swollen, food taste like metal, no energy, dizzy all the time, can't focus, throwing up, etc... Get admitted and officially diagnosed with ESRD. Had a tunnel catheter for a couple weeks for Hemo, then removed and now in 2nd week of PD. Glad to see there's a place where I can get real answers and people I can relate to

Hey there pdsucks.  I suspect HD sucks more.  I've been doing PD for 12 months now and hoping I can stay away from HD for as long as possible.  25 is young to be burdened with dialysis, but there are a lot of people much younger.  I hope you can settle into life on PD soon.  It's much better than the alternative.

Welcome PD and sorry you had to come here, but you will find it very helpful here.  A whole lotta young people on this site going through the same thing.  Thanks for sharing your story with us.  It is crap for sure.

yes, I do suspect you may feel HD sucks if you ever have to deal with that - knowing someone who's had to go from PD to HD and finding the transition and further restrtctions and stuff a bit of a chellenge well... but let's not go there - there is all so new and scary for you i can but imagine how you feel about it - even moreso when you're in your mid 20's and should be concentrating on new job, new life, a partner/family/living life etc.... and this happens. I'm really sorry to read that aspect of your story.

Also sorry you had to be introduced in such a way, but your doc did warn you. I don't think many of us could fault a sense of denial and/or freaking out about it.

It does take time to get used to and adjust for sure, but PD is probably a great option for you in terms of lifestyle, work etc. I hope as things settle down for you that it will be better for you.

And yes, this community is for YOU! we have all kinds of people, all ages, who have this disease in common, and I am sure we can help you along this journey as it's all new, scary and freaky.

So again welcome to our community and best wishes as you settle into dialysis!
