Donor Rejected

Well, I had a friend who offered to be a donor but he was rejected. He is the one and only person who has even bothered to ask if it was possible to donate a kidney.
I gave him the contact info for the transplant center even though I didn't get my hopes up for the same reasons he was rejected. He is 80 pounds overweight and is taking medication for high BP. The tx center told him he would need to lose those 80 pounds and get his BP down to the point that he didn't need any medications for it.
Who knows...I believe it was a sincere offer so maybe he'll be motivated to lose the weight. He seemed disappointed that he was rejected. But losing that much weight would not be easy or fast.
It was nice he offered though!

I was "overweight" when I donated mine. My bp has always been fine though, on the low side usually. I was always muscular with a little extra padding (I used to say it was to keep me looking womanly). Perhaps if your friend gets "fit" he will be able to donate? If he loses half that amount in fat and turns the other half into muscle he may be able to donate. I hate when docs use BMI to determine health. If I got to my ideal BMI id look emaciated!
But the offer is nice
I was hubby's only offer (aside from his sister who is half his size and has her own health and kidney issues). He has a huge family and lots of friends who care and are concerned but nobody offers, and I know it's discouraging.
I'd send him a nice thank you note just the same, but I'm sappy like that.

Now what?

Sorry that happened Willis, you must be disappointed over this. Maybe it is a good thing and a kidney will come along for you in the meantime.

Awww, sorry Willis. Maybe this will be a good thing though and he'll shift those extra pounds, making himself healthier in the long-term.

Such conflicting emotions...gratitude for the offer but disappointment that it didn't work out. But you deserve the best kidney possible, and I'm not sure this would have been it.

I had about 8 people offer and contact the coordinator. Some were disqualified over the phone and 3 of them got through the initial screening only to have my blood reject them. I am afraid to get excited when someone offers anymore. My sis in law just offered to do a paired donation so maybe this will be my lucky one!
Just hang in there. A kidney will come your way.

Thanks all! I'm just happy to live in an age with such amazing medical technology! As recently as my grandfather's generation someone in my condition would have just died. So every day since I've been on dialysis is a gift.
