My name is Sally, but my user name is Alaskagirl. Alaskagirl has always been my husband's nickname for me, because I love cold weather and he, coming from Greece, does not understand why cold weather would appeal to anyone!. I'm 62 years old and work fulltime as a special education teacher in a high school. I have been on in center hemodialysis for one and one half years so far. I'm managing pretty well so far. Before ESRD I lived and taught for two years in Alaska and came back to Ohio in 2001. I loved Alaska, but my family was all back here, so I came home. We own a lovely little cottage in the mountains in northern Greece and I am trying to get insurance from the Greek government that will cover me there. If I do, I will be able to spend the summer in Greece. Dialysis in Europe is quite good and I befieve the trip will be very good for me. I am excited to meet new people on this board. I learn so much from fellow dialysis patients. Right now, I am in the process of switching from a graft to a fistula and I want to do buttonholes once it is mature. Does anyone have opinions about buttonholes? I'd be interested to hear your take on the procedure.

Welcome to IHD Alaskagirl,
Working as a special education teacher must have it's challenges. Being on dialysis can be a challenge. I'm beginning to think you like challenges, just kidding. It's great to have you here and you can learn more about Buttonhole technique here :
http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=1545.0
You can use the search feature and find more on the buttonhole technique also. Maybe we will see you in the chatroom sometime.

Welcome to our community, Alaskagirl! I love your name. I am from the tropics, but I love cold weather, too. We are in the same age group and started dialysis about the same time as well. This site is absolutely indispensable for me. I found it in my pre-dialysis days just before I was about to start, and it was a real God-send for me! Please keep posting and let us know how you are doing. When you want to rant and rave, this is just the place. Here people understand what you are going through! This site has developed into a real family, and that is not just hype. Many will tell you that it has helped them through their challenging days.
Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Alaskagirl. I am a teacher too. I taught special needs for years-for a while in the high school. I have taught grade 2 for the past 9 years and I would much rather that. None of the teenage hormones there!!

Welcome Alaskagirl.
I'm from Ohio also.
Can't imagine liking this cold weather tho, or the snow and ice.
Hope insurance matters work out so you can do your dream of spending summers in Greece.

I am new to dialysis and in the process of creating my buttonholes. Right now my arterial buttonhole is great but my venous is still being created. My fiscula is in my leg. It makes more sense to me sinse my veins are bigger there and that frees up both my hands to do everything myself. I am in traing for the home machine, r u?
