On Monday, I did dialysis like normal, felt normal when I got off the machine, and got into the taxi for the 45 min ride home. The taxi driver commented that she had been feeling sick for a while. About half way home, I started feeling a little sick as well. By the time we got to my town, we were both feeling worse. I had a headache, nausea, drowsiness, lightheadedness, and confusion. She was feeling disoriented as well, so much so that we went through an intersection and nearly hit a school bus! By then we suspected CO from the taxi, and I went straight to the hospital, and she said she would be checked out as well. I was put on high flow oxygen, and the doctor confirmed through blood tests that I did indeed have CO poisoning. I was in the hospital for the rest of the evening, and I ended up sleeping most of yesterday. I'm informing the taxi company of what happened so they know that one of their vehicles is potentially dangerous. I feel back to normal now, but I'm still worried about the driver, because she would have received a significantly higher dose than me. I have refused to ride in that particular taxi until I know it's safe. The driver told me at one point that it had an exhaust leak in the past, but it had been "fixed". Guess not!

That's appalling! They should be reported to whoever is in charge of regulating taxis in your city. That deserves a fine or worse.

Yikes!  Glad you're okay.  Hope the driver is too!

I have filed an official report of the incident with the cab company, and they have taken the incident taxi out of service. I have also found out that the company is buying a bunch of brand new vans and their older vehicles will be retired. The driver who also got sick is OK and she's driving again (in a different vehicle!).

Good Grief that is all you need.  Make it through dialysis and then this.  Glad everyone is okay.  Glad you forced some action.

So glad you went to the hospital straight away! And am also glad you did something about it. I'm sure it eased your mind knowing the driver was okay.
