I posed this question on Twitter, but only got one response.. I'd like to get a consensus.. *G*

I got The Hobbit and the 3 LotR books for Christmas, and I want to know which I  should read first.  I'm not sure if there's any order I  should read them in to understand everything, so I'm looking for direction.. *G*

I'd read the Hobbit first. It comes first chronologically and I think the LOTR is, well, better but I still enjoy the Hobbit. I think if you read it first you won't be least bit disappointed with the LOTR but if you read LOTR first you  might be a bit disappointed in the Hobbit.

If you're going to read The Hobbit at all, read it before LOTR.  It took me forever to get through The Hobbit, though; I thought the first third dragged terribly.

The first hundred pages are rough

So true, especially when you're only 13.
